Known for its beer, sausages, Oktoberfest and lederhosen, Bavaria is Germany’s largest federal state and one of its most popular tourist destinations. It's also one of the most independent-minded regions. Home to cities like Munich (the capital) and Nuremberg, Bavaria is also cherished for its hilly countryside, where such gorgeous sites as Hohenschwangau Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland) and Linderhof and HerrenChiemsee Palaces can be found.

Set in the center of the historical town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the residence of the famous mayor Heinrich Toppler the "Goldene Greifen" - Golden Griffin - has always been a meeting point for societal life. Our house is listed and protected as a landmark - because of this none of our guest rooms are the same, but each one has its own unique charme.
We stayed here with our extended family. We occupied 2 rooms. One bigger room for a family of 4, and another room for a couple. The bigger room was huge! Both rooms were clean. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was satisfying.

Check in was a mess and took ages. 20 Minutes per room at a self use terminal that chrashed and had to be restarted by guests. Almost one hour for 2 rooms, which is not funny when you arrive late with children. Additionally one bed was missing.

Pros: locatiom, price, clean basic, curt and helpful staff. Cons: a/c still not working due to winter season even though it’s warm, so we had to open the windows as it was getting stuffy and hot in the room. Big mistake as now we had to deal with endless construction noise including a loud jackhammer daily! We were so sleep deprived during our entire stay. Another problem was the broken shades between the bathroom and bedroom: zero privacy. Not sure what’s the purpose of this odd design anyway. The one thing that we considered acceptable though is the cost of the stay. We paid at least 3 star prices for a 2-3 star hotel vs. most Munich central 3 star hotels with 4 star prices.

We stayed several nights on 2 occasions while traveling around Bavaria. The new rooms are very well done. Comfortable beds, great shower and clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. We were ready to fly home and need a covid test - manager made appointment for us, filled out the forms and within an hour of signing us up, walking to the test center, we had our negative test complete for flight home. Breakfast was an excellent European selection.

For the price this was a very good place to stay in charming Rothenburg and I was happy that we had chosen a place inside the city gates instead of a hotel at the train station. The breakfast service at Pension Elke was great and the host went out of his way to make sure that we got all what we wanted and at the same time made sure to avoid the spread of virus by serving everything from the extensive buffet himself instead of letting guests get close and help themselves.

Upon arrival we had no parkingspace available. Check-in lady was very friendly. She told me I hadn't paid and have to pay upon check-in. I told her, I paid with Booking.com and gave the proof. I also told her I only had to pay for the dog still. She told me she would hand it over to the bosslady and it would be okay. They didn't check our Covid Passport. We went to our room, that was very tiny, but clean. Bathroom was modern and also very small. If you have a lot and thick hair, be very patient. The pressure isn't all that. We had parking view and some noise of the parking. We ate at the restaurant. It was very tasteful German food. Ladies were again very friendly. The bed was horror. I had to find a comfortable spot in the hole that was created by previous guests. I can tell you I had a very bad sleep. Next morning, we ent down for breakfast. the hallway isn't to spacious, so I stepped aside because there were people on the check-in. Someone said to me 'You wait there' in a unfriendly way. I wasn't planning on going anywhere lady. So I met the bosslady. We it was our turn she said to me 'You didn't pay your room'. I became a bit aggravated and told here 'Yes, I did pay the room on August 9th and gave the proof yesterday' After a few minutes she said she found but I have to pay for the dog. I told her I KNOW I have to pay for the dog. Breakfast was very simple, you had to point out which bread you wanted en had to follow a specific way (which no one did). On check-out, I still had to pay for the dog, so I want to the bureau where the bosslady saw me and had me waiting for 10 minutes because her kitchen conversation was more interesting then the stupid 9 euros for the dog. The bed and bosslady spoiled the stay for us. When passing through in the coming years, we will find another place to stay.

Made a good choice for a one-night stay, arriving by car, as outside the central restricted zone (yet only 10 minutes from the stunning heart of the city, over a canal lock then the Danube). Relatively expensive (€145 with breakfast for two), but we did get an immense room - very sparsely furnished, with idiosyncratic fittings, in places style over substance. An excellent buffet breakfast, and easy parking underneath.

Very welcoming host who gave loads of recommendations, and he even moved his own car, so we could park on his spot instead of in the street. The room was clean and well equipped, and although the bathroom was a little small is was very functional and had a nice shower.
