Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten. The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore.

This 19-century church replaced an original one from the 13th century and includes many works of Ivan Mestrovic, Croatia's most famous sculptor.
Seen as a symbol of the city of Zagreb, St Mark's Church is situated in the upper part of the city. The colourful roof displays a couple of coats of arms.

This 18th-century, 18 hectare park also houses the city zoo.
What a lovely park. There's plenty of green space to have a picnic, play with your pup, do yoga, etc., and trails to stroll along or run on. Maksimir is an ideal place to get outdoors while staying in the city.

Magnificent set up on the hill above the city. Majestic, beautiful, even though one tower is shrouded with scaffolding. Walking inside we were overwhelmed by the peaceful serenity, beauty of the architecture, the many glorious stained glass windows, the statues and altar. We lit candles for recently departed dear friends and their grieving families and felt an extra special peace and comfort as we walked away. Truly a very special place to visit. So good for the soul to find such peace in today's world ...

The upper town is truly the center of Zagreb and provides a glimpse into the early days of this city. Take the funicular up from the new part of town and stroll past the houses of government, St Mark's church, and the last remaining city rampart. As you work your way down through the Bloody Bridge and the market, recall the historic origins of Zagreb!

Vivid place. I've never seen so many open air cafe bars in just one street. The place is so vibrant. In any time of the day, here was so full of life.

This city center is dominated by a statue of the 19th-century governor of Croatia, which was removed by Tito in 1947 but restored in 1990 as an act of defiance.
I reached this main square traveling by tram from Bus station as my hotel is located just at walkable distance. An exciting and invigorating place to wander around, relax and explore the beautiful Zagreb from here. There is an imposing huge sculpture of Count Jelacic, a national hero, in whose memory the Square is named. The signages at one corner guide travellers with suitable directions to visit all the important Museums and other places of interest. With newspaper stands , cafes, icecream shops, all types of eateries, tram station, temporary market, cathedral and entrance point to famous Dolac, this is a true Centre that no one can miss.

I have to walk through this amazing, active, crowded and iconic market many a times during my three days stay at Zagreb as the hotel where I was staying is located in one of the lanes nearby. It's just behind main square, at a raised platform, connected with series of steps. It's enjoyable to see the farmers from all over, assembling in the morning offering fresh and variety of fruits, vegetables, greens, herbs, cheese, honey, handmade soaps, wooden toys and the products of daily use for one and all. The beautiful and aesthetically designed sculptures here and there at this place add beauty to this sprawling open market. There are plenty of small cafes with old style stools and umbrellas offering early walkers freshly brewed tea, cookies and biscuits. There is separate covered market at a corner Ribarnica with fresh fish. There is an underground for butchers selling meat and related products. Best place to witness day to day life of locals and mingle with friendly strangers. It's amazing to observe that by 5 pm in the evening everyday the place become empty, clean, swept nicely.

Museum of Broken Relationships is a physical and virtual public space created with the sole purpose of treasuring and sharing your heartbreak stories and symbolic possessions. It is a museum about you, about us, about the ways we love and lose. At its core, the Museum is an ever-growing collection of items, each a memento of a relationship past, accompanied by a personal, yet anonymous story of its contributor. Unlike ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from grief and loss, the Museum offers the chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creativity - by contributing to its universal collection.
We found this exhibition to be by a very clever and left field artistic space All exhibits had their own often sad story and this museum is well worth a visit
