Antwerp's Parc den Brandt contains a number of very rare W.W.2 bunkers that were build as part of the "Atlantikwall", the German coastal defense built from above Norway up to Spain. The bunkers once housed the headquarters of the German 89th Army Corps, responsible for the coastal defense of Belgium and part of the Netherlands. Of the 8 bunkers in Parc den Brandt one of each type has been restored by the non profit organisation "Bunker & Airplane Archeology Antwerp" and now serve as a museum. In one of the 2 very rare SK1 bunkers visitors can discover how the bunker, and the very strategic section of Atlantikwall commanded from it, functioned. Also the air war and especially V1 and V2 weapons, that were fired at Antwerp during 6 hellish months, are given attention. During guided tours or special events with the re-enactors of npo "Frontlife '40-'45", the equally rare, medical bunker (VF57a) and personnel bunker (VF52a) can also be visited. Check the website for "Living museum" dates!
Great historic museum with the perfect location in a nazi generals bunker of the atlantic wall where you can learn about the important role Antwerp and its people had in the second world war. You will not only get to know all the cool stuff of how a bunker works or the V1 and V2, this is all told by passionate guides as Olivier! If you are visiting Antwerp in the first weekend of every month this should be a must in your visit. I recomend it 100%!!! it is even getting better each year thanks to the awesome volunteers whose tremendous work is helping to keep our common past alive! Also is fully available in english and you can book a private tour to see the medical bunker and the plain soldiers one.

We had an absolute wonderful time at the Grand Cafe - a restaurant newly opened in the Castle Den Brandt. The steak tartare was to die for! And the entrecôte was divine. Best of all was the ambience and friendly service - to be visited again!
