Mataatua: The House That Came Home

After more than 130 years away, Mataatua Wharenui - New Zealand's only repatriated and most travelled Maori meeting house - stands once again as the unifying soul of the Ngati Awa (one of the Maori tribes of the Bay of Plenty) New Zealand. Built in 1875, it travelled to Sydney, Melbourne, Victoria & Albert Museum and South Kensington Museum (London), Dunedin and Otago (South Island) before being rebuilt back in its place of origin, Whakatane, in 2011. We did the Bushwalk and Snack Run trip. Met by, and taken on tour by Mel this was a great fun experience. Can thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone. We stopped to feed the chickens, stopped to walk a beautiful Kahikatea Tree Forest, had yummy Milo and fed a Weka while stopped in a little Bush Camp and then to the end of the line to turn around (great fun turning around!), and head back to the starting point. 2 to 4 persons per converted golf cart Easy for adults and teenagers to drive - no steering required ! We really loved it!
