Gandhi Ashram Sewagram

Bapu Kuti (Bapu Cottage) History, Culture and Peace Sevagram, Maharashtra Around 2 hours drive from Nagpur city, there lies a lot of History, Culture and Peace. Whichever of the three interests you. Sevagram - ‘The village of service’. Mahatma Gandhi’s last home. We choose a weekday to avoid rush, to our surprise this is no hidden gem, we saw many national and international tourists peacefully walking into history. The history tells us this serene village was #Mahatma Gandhi’s residence from 1936 to his death in 1948. The ashram was built to support local farmers and to promote self sustainable economy. A telephone booth with a phone can still be seen, it was used to communicate with ruling British Government in 1940’s. Gandhi’s personal belongings are still on display in the beautiful mud huts, which still stand tall and strong. You can see his typewriter, the kitchen where he used to cook and even his bathroom. The Ashram is extended to praying area, dining area, kasturbaji’s hut, his office and many other artifacts which are open for all to see.The historic slogan "Quit India" was first uttered at Sewagram . Today the place stands for a culture . A culture of Khadi. A culture of Bapu’s teachings of peace and satyagrah. A culture promoting rural development, horticulture and small scale industry. One can buy pure khadi and cotton cloths and even watch cotton fabric being spun by locals. You will see Bapus garden still green and alive. A Gobar Gas Plant can be spotted on the grounds. Morning and evening prayers still happening on the praying grounds. School children paying respect to the father of the nation. Local homemade food products being sold in a shop. If nothing, you will find peace here. Visitors resting area is shaded beautifully with aged old trees. Reminding us gently of the vision of Mira Ben - the first resident and founder of ashram. The earthy huts, cold breeze below the tree canopy, nicely maintained grounds and shrubs. Something about the place will make you sit, gaze and relax. Vibes, they matter. Across the street is accommodation ( Lodge) by Ashram and a restaurant - the ‘Aahar Kendra’. An unlimited Thali of simple home cooked meal ... starting from 50 Rs. Bhakri, zunka and Bharit. The quintessential maharashtrian meal. Puran Poli is to die for ! I have never had Puran Poli with almost no cover around the Puran. It is deliciousness to another level. The place offers option to sit on the floor or table chair. Place was crowded but service was prompt. The beautiful earthy matka on every table gently reminds us - Say no to Plastic! The drive from Nagpur to Sewagram is beautiful with farms and Nilgiri plantations, a good day trip option especially for children and elderly. Bapu’s last home takes you to another era and welcomes you with a touch of History, Culture and #Peace. Note: ✅No entry or Parking fee at #sewagram ✅Toll has to be paid both ways from #Nagpur ✅Be quiet inside #Ashram and carry your own metal water bottles - Avoid Plastic ✅ #Wardha is just 20-30 minutes drive and is a good option if you want to buy khadi - we went to Mangaldeep Khadi Bhandar and did find lot more variety there than Ashram. Ambadi Sharbat and organic Till oil is also available here. Along with many other products. Travel and food lover. Instagram: Tandoori_delight
