I did try to research the wall walk. Though most people walk east to west, we decided to go west to east, as generally the wind was supposed behind you. Many people coming the other way agreed we had made the right choice. However, going east to west, the first couple of says are flat before you hit the hilly bits, so you don’t hit the tough parts on the first day or so. As we only had 3 days, we decided to walk from Walton (near Brampton outside Carlisle) to Heddon on the Wall. It appeared we were covering the best bits, and what we missed was mainly through suburbia. We had visited Housteads & Vindolanda in previous years, so didn’t need to spend as long there this time. We’d love to do it again, and have a driver carrying our luggage. I’d also take double the time allowing extra days to explore the surroundings, (eg Housteads, Vindolanda etc & the villages) We both carried our clothes etc in our backpacks. As background, my wife and I were 60, reasonably fit. I had walked at least 10,000 steps every day for the previous year. I had high cut Keen walking boots that were great. Not a hint of a blister. Robyn had problems with her shoes. We flew into Manchester, then caught a train to Brampton via Carlisle. It was a lovely journey and the advance purchase fares were very reasonable. Our BnB host (Greenacres B&B) had offered to collect us from Brampton. She also dropped us at the Howard Arms Hotel at Brampton for dinner and collected us afterwards!!! How’s that for service!! Charles Dickens stayed overnight at the Howard Arms Hotel during one of his reading tours. Day one, Walton to the Cawburn Road .. 18 September 2019 It was a spectacular day, sunny and green with sheep and cattle everywhere who were very friendly. So scenic, peaceful, and incredibly historic. The second part of the day we traversed a lot of hills and escarpments, it was certainly up hill and down dale, and tricky underfoot We got to within 2.8 km of the Steel Rigg car park, (not that far past turret 41a.) We were aiming to be picked up by our BnB host from the Steel Rigg car park, but it wasn’t to be, Robyn had had enough. We walked down the Cawburn road to the B6318 where our host rescued us and drove us to Bardon Mill where we stayed the night. We had walked around 35 km. We had a lovely dinner at the local pub. It was too long a day. I should have split it in 2, and maybe stayed somewhere around Gisland. We’ll do that next time. Day 2, Housteads to Wall Our son and partner joined us, Our lovely host dropped us at Housteads Fort. We were supposed to start from the Steel Rigg car park, but Robyn was foot sore, and we didn’t want to make it too strenuous a day. Unfortunately, that meant we missed trekking the famous Sycamore Gap. It just means we’ll have to do it again. Only 20 km walked, from Housteads Fort to Wall. So peaceful and scenic, but not as hilly. We stayed in an Air BnB just up the road from the Hadrian Hotel at Wall. Our lovely host did pick us up from the George Hotel at Chollerford, as Robyn was very foot sore. Day 3, Wall to Heddon on the Wall It was an easy walk from our Air BnB back to the wall. Robyn did not do the last leg. And so our Hadrians Wall journey came to an end. It was a memorable 3 days. The weather was kind, the BnB accommodation perfect, with lovely hosts, and the body stood up reasonably well.(except to Robyn, but she wasn’t too bad) We walked 25 km that last day. It was easy going, and while it was still scenic, it was not as spectacular as the preceding days. The Wall runs for 120 km in total, from Newcastle upon Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway. We covered around 75 km of that. Though we saw the best of it, we'd love to go back one day and have another crack at it.

Part of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site, Segedunum is the most excavated Roman fort along the Wall with surviving foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself. With a large interactive museum, a section of Wall and a 35 metre high viewing tower providing outstanding views across Tyneside there is also a changing programme of exhibitions. There is also a seasonal programme of events including historical re-enactments with gladiators and artisans, to regular events for families during school holidays. Kids under 16 always go free.

Received some excellent customer service from an employee named Cody. He was extremely polite and welcoming! He had a smile while we were served our refreshments and cinema tickets. He also made my tango ice blast on point and the best I had. Give this guy a pay rise!
