A showcase of the late Gothic Portuguese architecture. It is the sumptuous composite Portuguese style of architectural ornamentation of the first decades of the 16th century, incorporating maritime elements that was probably introduced by the Portuguese voyagers. This is what it means by the Manueline art. and architecture.
.
The interior of the church displayed the beautiful ornamentation too.

Santa Clara Convent

Occupying a prominent hilltop position along the Rio Ave, the convent/mosterio is likely the first major building you will see upon entering Vila do Conde. The monastery dates back to 1777 and possesses an impressive Gothic/neoclassical architectural style. High walls surround much of the building as well as the impressive Santa Clara Aqueduct (Portugal's second largest). I did not enter the convent (I'm unsure if one is really allowed to enter), but the exterior and the grounds are worth viewing. From its hilltop position sizeable Terrace there are commanding views overlooking Vila do Conde.

Situated to the south of the 'fort' and right on the estuary, this chapel provides rather a surprise. The exterior is very plain but step inside and you are immediately taken aback at the decoration which is quite over the top..... The place is very peaceful and it's worth sitting and praying in this quiet spot with only the sound of the sea for company.

Museu das Rendas de Bilros de Vila do Conde

Reviewed By Midlands_T - Northamptonshire

My Mum makes lace and when meeting up with the opportunity to see how lace is produced in Portugal via a guide book mention, it ws straight into the 'to do' list.
There is a short AV on the history of lace making, local area and the GWR item.
The impressive display of different articles is complemented by a bi-lingual (trip-lingual at times), who could ask questions of the demonstration ladies.
Take time to linger, there is the Guiness World record lace piece, wedding dresses and the intricate minor pieces displayed in the perspex case, in glass cabinets, or on the buttons,

Recommend that you visit not between 12:00 and 14:00 hours as this is their lunch hour, open but with no demonstrations.
Note: we spent over two hours here - but only due to the involvement of Mum in the handicraft lace making in UK
