Restaurants in Vence

We visited many old towns but this is the cleanest and most interesting. A decision was made in the 15th century to build homes in the city walls and everything is well preserved. There are tons of good restaurants and shops. The town is really lovely.

Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence is a small Catholic Chapel in Vence, dedicated to the Dominican Order, built and decorated between 1949 to 1951. It houses a number of Matisse originals and was regarded by Matisse, himself, as his 'Masterpiece'. Some also regard it as one the great religious structures of the 20th century. Henri Matisse collaborated on the chapel in response to a request by Monique Bourgeois asking for his help with the Chapel's design. Ms. Bourgeois was a young nurse who had attended to Matisse's recovery from surgery due to cancer. She had also served as his model, posing for several drawings and paintings. In 1943. she joined the Dominican convent in Vence and became, Sister Jacques-Marie. The Chapel is situated on a hillside, overlooking the beautiful Southeastern France countryside. The exterior is a white building, with a roof decorated in a blue and white zigzag pattern and a metal cross with a bell sitting atop it. Inside, its white walls reflect the colours of the stained glass windows. Everything inside is due to the genius of Matisse, the altar, furnishings, and liturgical items, all done in a simplistic style. Whether you are a Matisse fan or just an admirer of creativity, this should on your places to visit while in the Vence area!
