The natural pools in Velas are a little kinder on your feet as there is a small concrete area on the land side of the pools which can be used to access the water (the ones in Sao Miguel had to be accessed across the lava).

After arriving at Norte Grande, follow the signs for Fajã do Ouvidor. At a crossroads, go a 100 meters or so and you will see the miradouro with a large parking area.
This gives you the most breathtaking complete view of the fajã, and shows you truly how unique this geographical formation is.
The descent is not difficult, only be careful of loose sandamd leaves especially if they are wet.
In the summer, bring your swimwear, because there is beautiful natural swimming pool where Fajã do Ouvidor meets the ocean.
After returning to the top, you can also visit the nearby Casa do Parque museum.

This archway is located slightly outside the centre of Velas (a 5/10 minute walk) on the coastline behind the medium sized Hotel Sao Jorge. There is free parking in the immediate vicinity and a little viewing area too. Certainly worth a quick stop for some photographs if you're in the area.

The Aventour is a holiday activity company, which operates in the sector of Tourism of Adventure and Nature. It offers new experiences since 2000 in this lost paradise in the middle of the Atlantic. The Aventour has several organized programs on the island of San Jorge and some other Islands of the Azores. We are pioneer in this sector in the Azores. For this and for all these years of experience, we create quality products, always under the constant guidance of our guides and monitors. The well being as well as our sense of responsibility are the necessary ingredients to give you different holidays full of new experiences, away from the daily "stress" and wrapped in this "Magic Nature" that this island offers you.
My husband and I booked the Caldera Plus package which included a guided hike, canyoning down Waterfalls, lunch, and an exit in ATVs. Our tour guide Luis was excellent, he pointed out several local plants, was skilled with the ropes while canyoning (always good when you are going down a waterfall), and knew the area, locals, and trails well. Lunch was amazing, fresh clams and seafood with local cheese and bread but the best part of the day was the views and rappelling down the Waterfalls. Definitely recommend if you have a day on Sao Jorge

Second time I visited the Sao Jorge in July. I love this island. I spent 2 days with the best team, who made my vacation. Kayaking, canyoning, hiking... Swimming in the ocean, amazing views, Waterfalls, magic and energy places, my lovely rainbow... Good laughter, good feelings, friendly atmosphere... Guys, thank you very much for all. You are very professional!!! In winter in Moscow I will remember these days to keep warm:) Good luck! I hope I will have a chance to see you again!

This church is set in a beautiful location. However, it is currently covered in scaffolding and access was not possible on 2 July 2016. There was no information about when it would reopen.

We visited this site on our journey back from Pico Da Esperanca to Velas (the road is excellent). The site (which is at an altitude of 400 metres) includes a mirador with superb views of the airport's runway(!) and the neighbouring Islands of Pico and Faial.
There is also a large outdoor play area for children and an outdoor fitness area for adults. When we visited on a Saturday afternoon there were a number of families making use of the barbecue facilities. There are also plenty of gentle paths (no steep inclines) for those that wish to stretch their legs and perhaps take in the plant Gardens at the same time.
Well worth a visit, especially if you are travelling with children. Plenty of car parking and no entry fee.

We did a half day trip. Ricardo is an experienced skipper. He is pleasant, but can also remain 'in the background'. The ship is a fast sailer. You get the opportunity to participate in all activities on board. All in all very much recommended.
The São Jorge Park's House was installed in the building of the old Primary School of the Norte Grande and intends to show visitors the different valences of the Natural Park. It has a permanent exhibition called "Tesouros do Parque" (Park Treasures), consisting of a map of the island with information of their different protected areas classified by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and several information supports about the Natural Park, including topics such as geology, biodiversity and heritage. In the main room is a children area equipped with educational games about Azores and the environmental awareness. You can also enjoy the multimedia area which provides information about the RAMSAR areas and sounds of nature, as well as an exhibition of photographs of São Jorge Protected Areas by Paulo Henrique Silva. End your visit in the auditorium, viewing several documentaries about the Whaling and Fajãs de São Jorge.
