We had a great day climbing with Cliffhanger. My group consisted of myself, my husband, and my 10 year old daughter. We climbed with Roddy who was fantastic. He was patient and helped us get through some jitters when first starting out. The day is customizable so you can try/do what you feel up for. We added in a rappel mid morning which was awesome. The company is well run. They responded immediately when I was booking the reservation and everyone I spoke with was friendly and informative. They also do all private tours which lets you be as slow or as fast as you want/need to be on your climbs. I would defineately climb with them again if we come back out to Joshua Tree. It was our favorite part of the trip!!

Twentynine Palms Visitors Center

Every bit of information you could possibly want to find out about Twentynine Palms and surrounding communities can be found here! Friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to answer your questions, provide you with materials, and offer insider tips on how best to enjoy our beautiful desert city.

We went to all three entrances of the park and by far, the 29 Palms entrance provides access to the best hiking. I am 60 and do not want something too hard but a 2-4 mile hike with a moderate incline will work for me. Seeing wildlife is my goal but a close second is landscapes to photograph. This is the place. I recommend Split Rock (2 miles round trip) for a pre-sunrise hike. About 15 minutes from the Marriott in 29 Palms. Limited restrooms in the park and no water so bring plenty. Cold mornings - 44 this morning but up to 60s by mid-day. Some hikes are very windy so good idea to bring long sleeves despite being in Southern California in a desert! Sun screen is a must!

Smith's Ranch Drive-In

Reviewed By SNAFU23 - Los Angeles, California

I visited the Smith's Drive-in with my family and we all had a fantastic evening.

The cost is $5 per person (over 3 years), for 2 movies. I was there in January and the theater opened at 6:30pm, and the movie started at 7pm.

This is an old school 50's drive-in, that could be the background for any 80's horror/thriller movie, which made it very awesome.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The sound is transmitted through your FM radio.

There is a small snack bar, with basic items; popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, candy, soda, etc. The prices were very reasonable, and the popcorn was delicious.

This was a very fun experience for the family, especially since they have only been to a Drive-in one other time.

If visiting Twentynine Palms or Joshua Tree, put this on our list of things to do.

Barker Dam Trail

We did a bunch of hikes in the park over three days. We really liked this one for the rocks, the vegetation, and the water backed up by the old dam gave it some extra appeal. We definitely recommend this hike which is not much more than one mile.

Lots of arts and gifts in a very relaxing and calm store. The lady running the gift shop was so friendly and welcoming. Easy to pick up a few souvenirs of the desert and 29 palms area. Nice parking area and pleasant grounds. Ideal place to stop when you've had your fill of hiking at JOSHUA Tree.

Housed in the oldest public building in the area, it provides visitors a chance to experience a 1920s-era schoolroom, view artifacts and exhibits pertaining to the history of Twentynine Palms and surrounding desert, browse and purchase local books, gifts, and more.

We went to the Old Schoolhouse Museum. Its a free museum; donations encouraged.

It was fun to see the Old Schoolhouse as well as the different exhibits. There is some interesting artwork and wind mill outside the museum, as well as an exhibit on the Moronga Transit Authority.

The school teacher statue is also unique.

When we were there they were setting up for their annual WEED event which is to honor Old Timer of the Year nominees. This year it is David A. Brownell, Dr. Ted Vick, and Walter and Velma Holland.

This small building houses both the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and the Chamber of Commerce. So, when you come in, you see racks of brochures, and racks of business cards. Some souvenir t-shirts are for sale here, plus art by local artists.

Large and very clean bathrooms, and there are 3 computers for public use set up on a table. You are requested to limit your use to 30 minutes. Also, free WiFi.

It is so very nice and cool inside, and the people there are friendly and helpful.
