The Mesalands Community College's Dinosaur Museum and Natural Sciences Laboratory is located in Tucumcari, New Mexico, on old Route 66. Many of the genuine fossils on display were collected by students enrolled in the College's Paleontology program. Also on display are life-sized bronze dinosaur sculptures created through the College's Fine Arts Bronze program. We offer a discount on admission for active military, seniors, and educators. Parking available for RV's.
We were looking for something to do in Tucumcari, and saw a brochure for this museum. We tend to visit a lot of museums, have an interest in paleontology, and it seemed like it might be fun. We were very pleasantly surprised. It's not the biggest or best museum I've ever been to, but for a museum focused on paleontology in a small town in New Mexico that only cost $6.50 to get in, it was incredible. The displays were very well laid out and informative, and the windows into the prep area that allowed you to see them working on fossils was very nice. The only real complaint I've got is that some of the plaques with the descriptions were worn to the point of being difficult to read. One other very minor point, and it's probably going to offend the people at the museum because they're very proud of this, is that I don't like the fossils on display to be cast in bronze. I know that most museums rely primarily on casts, but if I'm looking at a cast, I'd rather have a cast which looks like the original, and the resin casts used by most museums look more like the original fossils. Just my opinion, others may differ.

This is an eclectic collection of anything and everything you could be looking for on a road trip or as a local rancher. The owners, Stella and Jim Watson, are the friendliness and most aaccommodating Tucumcari Ambassadors you will ever meet. While it isn't Disneyland, you can spend hours exploring what the Supply has in stock. The free coffee and donuts, cinnamon rolls and bacon topped maple bars are definitely worth a stop. And if you are lucky enough to be in town on Friday or Saturday, don't miss their outstanding BBQ next door. We will never speed by Tucumcari on I-40 without stopping here; besides we even hid a geocache nearby.

This is a rather small shop which appears to be locally owned and operated. What a friendly shop owner! We loved the selection and seeing the historic shop. Recommend taking a trip down Route 66 and getting your kicks in this gift shop!

The murals in Tucumcari add to the Route 66 experience. You can view them all with the guide that is available at different places, like the Blue Swallow Motel. Tucumcari is not that big, so it's easy to visit them all.

Welcome center and gift shop
This is the best gift shop in town. They have fabulous jewellery made by the Lady who runs it. She was so helpful and friendly and the prices are really reasonable. This is next to the Blue Swallow motel and can be easily missed as it is on the site of an abandoned Hotel. Just look for the Clint Eastwood sign!

Me and my friends stopped by to take a group photo. The Photographer "MJ" was very nice and accommodating. She worked in a lot more poses than I expected and was a pleasure to work with. Thanks MJ for the great pictures of me and "Two Gun" Larry!!

The best small town area Historical Museum I have visited, and I have been to a lot them. This is based on the amount of different subjects they have, how it is displayed throughout 3 or more buildings, yard exhibits and most of all the very friendly and helpful staff.

This display is a single room located within the Convention Center. They have a good variety of "stuff" related to Route 66 and the 50's era of travel. Very interesting if you have such interests.

This is basically just a sign in front of the Convention Center. Nothing special or unusual. A 30 second " walk around" and you have seen it.

The New Mexico Model Railroad folks just happen to be there the weekend we were in town. Very interesting if you like trains but the model railroad made it worthwhile. The museum should consider having a permanent display of a model railroad.
