From its snow-capped mountains to its mighty fjords, from grand valleys to tranquil lakes and lovely archipelagos, the county of Troms is bursting with natural wonders. To cap it off, it also plays host to the northern lights. Tromso, the capital, is the gateway to the region's rugged beauty, but with 65,000 people it's also a surprisingly rich city culturally, with many interesting museums and sites (including the world's northernmost botanical garden) and even a pulsing nightlife.

What a lovely surprise as only 500 metres from where our ship docked and free to enter. The Gardens are very colourful even on a dull, damp day. The flowers were amazing for a garden that suffers such extreme conditions, mid night sun, seven months under snow but still a vast variety of flowers. Made up for the miserable weather! Not to be missed when in Tromso.

A must see on your trip in Norway. Perfect route for both winters and summers. The natural beauty is breathtaking and the whole route to see many Fjords is a journey in time.

The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. It runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. Fjellheisen was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal.
We walked for 40 minutes from our Hurtigruten ship to the cable car. The adult return price was 230NOK and the cars go on the hour and half hour throughout the day. From the hilltop viewing platform we enjoyed panoramic views across the city of Tromso and the surrounding fjords and snow-capped mountains. We chose not to take any of the open hiking trails to higher spots due to the cold wind.

The Science Centre offers northern lights planetarium shows every day. In addition there are close to a hundred interactive exhibits where everyone can have fun with popular science, exploring both regional and universal questions. The Science Centre is open about 359 days of the year. Check our website for opening hours, planetarium schedules and prices.
This is one of my favourite places to go and take visitors to Tromso. There is there an amazing Aurora video (still my favourite even after seeing it about 10 times). I love the hands on science activities that are varied and lots of fun as well as educational and informative. Best place to have fun while learning at the same time for all ages. Although many think it is more for kids I take adults and they love it too. Highly recommend.

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Tromsø tourist office for being so helpful in booking our once in a lifetime evening trip in the hope of seeing the mysterious Northern lights. The lady I’m so sorry I didn’t note your name )who helped in our plight was so understanding knowing that our previously booked trip was cancelled at the last minute due to poor weather which let us one night to see the lights before we left Tromsø. The lady was fantastic, understanding, empathetic and patient....thank you. We were truly spoilt by the spectacular display that greeted us in the booked trip. A fantastic last evening spent in beautiful Tromsø.

Great place to stop and take photos while driving around Senja. I visited in October and still had some Autumn colours left. If you don't like doing hikes, this is a must-see spot in Senja, as it's very easily accessible. Like most spots, I would highly recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset, or during the Northern Lights season.

Great museum about Roald Amundsen , Fritjof Nansen and others of the great Norwegian explorers with a lot of artefacts and pictures showing the rough life they had then on their expeditions. They were throughly heroes and Daredevils like our times astronauts. It’s a good idea to see the Norwegian film ”Admundsen” before you see the museum.

This was the only place we hadn’t already visited that was open on New Year’s Day and it was well worth the trek on foot up a hill with suitcases (our flight left the same evening). We received a friendly welcome before going into the first exhibition hall. There were lots of interactive displays, a great little film theatre where we watched a film about an expedition to a lava river, geographical halls, ethnographic displays, natural history displays - something for everyone. We spent a good 3 hours here, finishing off with an informative film about the northern lights. Highly recommended.

Housed in a very distinctive building that represents ice floes that have been pressed up on land by the rough seas of the Arctic, you will discover Polaria, just five minutes walk from the centre of Tromsø. Polaria has an Arctic aquarium, interesting knowledge-based exhibits, a panoramic cinema, and a gift and souvenir shop. In our panoramic cinema, you can look forward to the Ivo Caprino film "Svalbard - Arctic Wilderness"and the Ole C. Salomonsen production "Northern Lights in Arctic Norway". SEAL FEEDING AND TRAINING 12.30 and 15.30 in Winter and 12.30 and 15.00 in Summer.
Polaria is a centre of excellence in Arctic sea-life research that is open to the public as a small natural history museum, aquarium & seal pool. There is also a panoramic cinema, a cafe & gift shop selling Nordic goods. The highlight is the feeding & training of the bearded & harbour seals. After the feeding staff make themselves available to talk about the animals & the work Polaria undertakes. It’s a very interesting & educational place to visit.
