Mount Yasur

This relatively short volcano (360 meters above sea level) is regularly active.

This was an amazing trip run by a an awesome company - airtaxivanuatu. Great personal service and professional people. We were picked up from our accomodation and taken to the airport where Milly checked us in made us feel welcome. Flew off from Port Vila in a 6 seater Cessna with our pilot, George who took us for a clockwise then anti clockwise flight over the volcano before landing. Luke then picked us up in a 4 x 4 and we travelled through the rain forest and over the ash plains to Yasur. After a welcome ceremony we were taken up to base camp on a bumpity track then climbed to the crater rim to behold the mighty volcano. She boomed with delight and put on a magnificent fiery display to honour her guests. As the light faded the true power of nature was revealed. The glowing interior growled and hissed as we peered in. This was one hell of an experience that you couldn't get anywhere else! After darness fell we were escorted back and retraced our steps to our resort. Rockwater Eco lodge. I was expecting a shabby excuse for eco tourism but was delighted to be shown to a beautiful apartment akin to a hobbit house, but made of stone. An amazing place and very welcome after all the excitement. We had a great dinner homemade from local produce bY our hosts. If you only go to one place when on holiday in Vanuatu, DO THIS TRIP!!!!!!!

Louniel Beach

Louniel Beach is a surf beach ideally placed at the centre of the long stretch of beaches located on the northern sweep of the north-eastern side of the island. Louniel beach is a black sand beach reminiscent of the northern west coast beaches of the north island of New Zealand such as Piha and Muriwai. The coastline is covered in large plantations of Coconut palms and numerous Pandanus trees.Louniel beach has rolling surf, like its New Zealand counterparts, but its tropical setting makes the water temperature much warmer. The beach itself is not flat but - falls away fairly quickly allowing swimming in close to the shore. The black sand reminds one of powder snow and you can sink up to some depth in places. There are a number of underwater volcanic fumaroles just out to sea which results in various parts of the beach being covered in wavy patterns of pumice beads.A walk along the full length of Louniel beach takes about an hour and shows a different side of Tanna, most visitors don't get to see and appreciate. Getting to the beach is up over the transverse road from the whitegrass plains, to the cross roads in Middlebush. From there the road to Fetukai, leads onto the road down to the beach itself - the ride providing an exceptional view of the large Banyan trees and tall tree ferns amongst the dense tropical rainforest.Just before walking down onto the flatland adjacent to the beach, visitors can view the entire length of the beach from an escarpment immediately above it. The view is breathtaking, with My Yasur Volcano smoking in the background. Louniel Beach provides a contrasting experience to a trip to Tanna and one which ultimately ends up being a highlight to any visit to Vanuatu.

Yakel Village

Reviewed By greg_wanders - Auckland Central, New Zealand

I think the interaction at Yakel would compete with one of the top experiences in Vanuatu, keeping in mind you can also stand at the rim of an active Volcano. On our second day in Tanna we booked a day tour to Yakel village through are accommodation at Whitegrass. There is practically no other way to get there. It was 8000Vatu for the day tour, 1 hr drive from the airport. The small village of 800 people deep in the forests of central Tanna is home to one of the last tribal societies of the South Pacific where the ''Kastom'' way of life is still alive and thriving. Kastom is a pidgin word (Bislama/English) used to refer to traditional culture including religion, economics, art and magic in Melanesia. In cultures where language is unwritten, oral traditions of the kastom way of life, have been faithfully passed down from generation to generation. Charlie, one of the few members of the tribe to speak English,’took us around and showed us their simple way of life. The experience was very informative and eye opening and in all respects authentic. He showed us the tree house, their kitchen and introduced us to different members of the tribe. You can add a walk to the waterfall at an extra charge. At the end of the tour the tribe gathers around in the clearing in the forest to perform three of their traditional dances and you are free to buy a few handmade souvenirs from the women. I would recommend this while you are on Tanna Island , it could possibly be done on the same day with the mt Yasur tour as those do start in the afternoon. In total the trip to Yakel took about 4 hours including the drive.

Lenuanatuaiu Waterfall

Lenuanatuaiu waterfall is one of the iconic waterfalls of Tanna Island, and has been a must see for travellers for many years. The Lenuanatuaiu waterfall is reached via the transverse road starting at the whitegrass plains and heading up to the crossroads at middlebush. Taking the left hand turn at the crossroads, passing through Fetukai, and the next right will lead you to the 'Tanna-Adventures' restaurant where you can arrange to be taken down to the waterfall. The 'Tanna-Adventures' restaurant is situated at the edge of an escarpment providing fantastic panoramic views over the eastern side of Tanna Island. Visitors to the waterfall start here and follow a prepared (but rough) track down through the surrounding tropical bush to the waterfall. The small river which feds the waterfall has been said to have stayed within an age old prehistoric period and has remained unspoiled since then. One of the food sources of the local village is the fresh water shrimps which can be found there. As with all waterfalls, it is spectacular after heavy rain in the wet season, while water volumes decrease over the dry season. However, its great viewing at anytime, being enclosed within its own little valley and developing its own moss and greenery around. For those who are adventurous the river can be followed down onto the Louniel Beach - another great attraction.

Giant Banyan Tree

Reviewed By 529JohnH529 - Christchurch, New Zealand

If you think you're not going to be interested in a big tree, think again! We appreciated that our guide allowed us time to wander in and out among the 200 square metres of roots and branches of this enormous tree and even demonstrated (in flipflops!) how he climbed among the branches as a child. The visit is also well worth it for the insight into local village life and the field crops.

The dive through the overhanging rock is short and easy. In the cave magnificent lighting fascinates one. The sun rays are like beams and are reflected by the white sand on the bottom.
