Regina Rica

Reviewed By BernardandCoring - Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Must be our 5th visit by now. The main church was still under construction the first time. Finished now. Still plenty of construction work in progress elsewhere on the site. Plenty of parking available. Small pickups are available to take the less able around the site.
It was a Saturday morning with a number of pilgrim groups. Very busy. Queue at the figure on the hill chapel.
Mass at 11.00. It is a big church and must have been two thirds full. One of the Dominican sisters (she is tiny) does a meditation warm up and generally keeps everyone engaged. A lovely soul. The priest keeps the cheery feel to the mass going. Nice.
Engagement with religious sites is a deeply personal thing. This one does little for me. Worth a visit to see it and mass attendance is great if you are in the area.

Mount Daraitan & Tinipak River

Reviewed By Kriszy T - Paranaque, Philippines

We were a big group (14 people) and most of the group members were non-climbers, so we skipped Mt. Daraitan and went on the Tinipak River trekking and Cave.
This was a safe choice coz it was fairly easy and the trail is good enough for kids (elementary level). The view is just majestic and you can't help but jump in and waddle in the refreshing clean river.
For those who plan on going caving - rent headlights (its only P30.00) we had a hard time since we were holding flashlights it would be better to have both hands free as the decend to the cave is a bit challenging.

Daranak Falls

Reviewed By Elaine C - Makati, Philippines

I went on a solo trip to Daranak Falls and left my house after lunch. I naively thought that Tanay is not that far. Well, it is far. I reached Star Mall in Shaw Blvd. via MRT around 2:30 PM. I opted to ride the jeepney and had to wait for almost 30 mins. for it to be full. I reached Daranak by 4:40PM, and they close at 5PM. I wanted to have more time to just sit and enjoy the view and hear the waterfall sound, but of course I had no more time. The picture you see on the Internet is the same as it is when you visit, or maybe it depends on the season. I was pleasantly surprised to see the waterfall, it's beautiful, I thought there would be just a trickle. I hope the Tanay local government can keep this natural attraction as it is, and even improve on its surroundings without impacting the waterfall. Maybe more railings for the weak-kneed? I asked the tricycle driver to take me to the Falls and paid him 150. I had no idea of the going rate for the tricycle but I didn't haggle since as long as I'm safely brought to my destination I'm happy and grateful. The driver was kind. Go early so you'll have more time to explore the Calinawan Cave, visit the windmill, and climb up from Daranak to see Batlag Falls. Going home, I rode an FX van and wished I'd taken the jeep since I waited for another 30 minutes before the FX van left.

Batlag Falls

Reviewed By Xelami - Manila, Manila, Philippines

Been to Daranak Falls twice and never tried to hike in Batlag Falls. They always say to us that this falls is more beautiful than Daranak. So on my thrid visit to Daranak Falls, we hike for few minutes and pay an entrance of Php 100.00 to see Batlag. But what I could say is they have different beauty. I couldn't say it's more beautiful than Daranak. The water here is not as clear as Daranak. But I understand why it's entrance is higher. It is because you can enjoy swimming here because it's not that deep and not crowded.

Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia

Reviewed By KIMI4812 - Quezon City, Philippines

RICA in Tanay Rizal is an apt start for the Holy Week. It is a 13.5 hectares development for Christian worship located along the Infanta Road which ends in Quezon Province. We left Quezon City at 5:00 a.m. on a Holy Thursday and drove through Antipolo City towards Tanay through scenic mountain roads, weaving through the moderately zigzag roads. We even caught the rising sun amidst the mountain slopes of the Sierra Madre range and cloaked by the white clouds of dawn. We reached RICA after an hour and a half without traffic and just got in time before the throngs of worshippers arrive. We sat for a short orientation and started the Way of the Cross. All four of us prayed together going from one station to another, walking down and up the hilly slopes. An hour of walking tired all of us and we went to Pasilungan where we ate a healthy breakfast of lugaw (rice soup with egg), noodles and chop suey (mixed veggies without meat). Brewed coffee was good and we even had ice cream. The pesto bread was good paired with ginger jam. Yummy. We filled our spirits with prayers and our stomach with good food. Nice way to start the Holy Week.

Mt. Maynoba

Reviewed By sojournerchild - Manila, Philippines

Mt. Maynoba (pronounced as May-nu-ba by the locals there) for me, is one of the cleanest and beautiful Mountains I've been so far. There are no vandals that you could see written on the rocks and trees like in other Mountains I hiked. Getting there is easy since public transportation is accessible and if you're living in the Metro, Rizal is a good location for you & other adventurers! I could suggest it to first time hikers :) The organization handling the hiking activities are approachable and to start the activity, they provide a mountain guide for each group (1 guide for max. of 4-5 persons). Me and my friend-a second timer there, had a sip of coffee first in the sari-sari store in the entrance where you can buy food or baon.
We first hike through Mt. Cayabu, enjoy the ascent guys and make sure to stop for a while, not just to take pictures of the surrounding Valleys and Mountains (like Sierra Madre), but to truly indulge in the views! Since we've been there this month, we have not seen the sea of clouds, if you want to, according to our guide, you can also have their private transport to reach the loc. early, but May to June are the best months to see them. Campsites are awesome too; you can lax, breath, and drink a lot of water, t'was between hikes from Mt. Cayabu to Mt. Maynoba. At the peak, make sure to visit Caio's grave (the guide dog), just sayin' since I'm a pet lover.
You will pass through the eight Waterfalls! I truly suggest you take a long dip. haha! Me and my friend got to enjoy the first and last falls - cold water but its refreshing and sorta heal the tired muscles. The duration will be dependent on how well you enjoy the Mountains, if it is rainy, it's sure had a lot of muds and some descents might be difficult to pass through but they have bamboo fences fixed and ropes for rappelling, for some parts of the loops needed extra help. :) We started our hike at 7AM and were back to Brgy. Cayabu base at 2PM when we had our lomi merienda.
Tips: Get a good rest before the hiking day
What to bring: Extra clothes, atleast 2L of water, camera, tent (for camping), and lunch and snacks.
Registration Fee: Php40.00/head
Guide Fee: Php500/dayhike (Hello Ate M!), Php1000+ for overnight

Palo Alto Resort

Reviewed By Porsche D - Mandaluyong, Philippines

This resort offers you a great escaped from all your stress and disappointments in life. This Palo Alto Resort have two resort, the one is PALO ALTO FALLS, where in you need to climb up to 249 steps about 5-10 minutes of walking to reach the top of the mountain to see a such beautiful creation of God. ♥ It so lovely but when we go there make it sure that it you go earliest as possible. Since there are only limited slots for cottages. 100php per head. 500-700 for cottages.
Since we do not have any cottage left we decide to move to PALO ALTO CLUBHOUSE, it offers a good ambiance as well as the staff they were very approachable. :) 150php for entrance fee. You may use their grilling station. Since we had no possible cottage to get. We decided to have the AC room for 800php good for 10-15 person. ♥
I do love this place. The slide is very exciting to try.
But the Comfort Room has no water dripping on it. It so hard to make rinse nicely. :)
I will surely comeback here. :)
PS. It is nicer if you bring your own food. :)

Maytuntong Cave

Reviewed By Kriszy T - Paranaque, Philippines

I've been looking for reviews for this place before I visited last week. Though some have written blogs about it this cave isn't that well advertised by Daraitan / Tanay Office. Known as "Tinipak Cave" in Daraitan this is definitely a must see attraction.
Tips for the cave exploring:
Hike is around 40 mins to an hour so pack light and use a waterproof bag. Since you will be using your hands for the cave decent bring or rent out head lights. If you have strong night vision camera or high flash you would be able to take good shots inside the cave (I wasn't), wear your swimming wear as it is really refreshing to swim inside the cave (Current is strong inside).
