Sussex (/ˈsʌsɪks/), from the Old English Sūþsēaxe (South Saxons), is a historic county in South East England corresponding roughly in area to the ancient Kingdom of Sussex. It is bounded to the west by Hampshire, north by Surrey, northeast by Kent, south by the English Channel, and divided for many purposes into the ceremonial counties of West Sussex and East Sussex. Brighton and Hove, though part of East Sussex, was made a unitary authority in 1997, and as such, is administered independently of the rest of East Sussex. Brighton and Hove was granted City status in 2000. Until then, Chichester was Sussex's only city.

Great doable side trip on the way to or from St. John, about 45 minutes northerly. About 2 dozen murals within walking distance of the charming visitor center/ ice cream shop in an old train station. Sully’s ice cream had about a half dozen very tasty and unique local flavors, and maybe the best ice cream of the trip! The visitor center is a pretty extensive military museum if you are interested. The walking tour is self-guided with the very worthwhile $2 brochure, takes you past a few cute restaurants, shops, an outdoor market and an unforgettable antique store. About a 20 minute round trip drive are the 3 nearby covered bridges if that suits your interest. Well worth a quick ~2-3 hour side trip on your way elsewhere. hidden gem!

This is a great hike! I found it to be easy going, safe and just a good jaunt for distance. The views are absolutely gorgeous. Particularly in the fall. Just a valley of color!
