Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright’s house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright’s career. Taliesin has a commanding presence in Jones Valley, the watershed where Wright’s Lloyd Jones ancestors settled after immigrating from Wales in the 1860s. Taliesin was named in honor of his Welsh heritage, was the name of a druid bard, and literally means “shining brow.” Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as “brow.” Taliesin was the principal residence of Wright as a mature designer, and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin in its three iterations (1911, 1914, 1925) represents the most complete embodiment of Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967).
I am so glad we made the one hour 15 minute trip from Madison Wisconsin to visit this historic and inspiring Frank Lloyd Wright property. Even though we went in November near the end of the season when only one tour type was offered, the grounds were still beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed touring his extensive house / studio. Though I still may prefer Taliesin West in Arizona, I learned so much from our knowledgeable guide and I’m so glad I experienced this treasure. All tours leave from the tourist information building, and you take a bus to his house. Be prepared to do a bit of walking, though you do get a chance to sit down. Be aware that you pretty much have to get here by car, as there doesn’t seem to be public transportation nearby, and no Uber or Lyft. Definitely a worthwhile visit!

Wisconsin Canoe is the fastest growing canoe and kayak rental company in the midwest. Based on the Wisconsin River in Spring Green, along with House on the Rock, Taliesin, and the American Players Theater. We offer the best people and the best equipment to get you to your favorite sandbar on the Lower Wisconsin River covering Prairie Du Sac, Sauk City, Mazomanie, and Arena. What started out as a new business with 10 old canoes and a trailer run by a couple of college kids has evolved to include a husband and wife team (yeah, two of those college kids) now operating the newest fleet of over 100 canoes and kayaks on the Wisconsin River. From Sauk City to Spring Green, we've been putting over 5,000 paddlers on the water every season.
We did the ten mile river trip. We were picked up by the Wisconsin Canoe Company's shuttle van at Peck's Landing which was a short distance from where we were staying (Spring Valley Inn) and dropped off ten miles North; the Arena. The tandem kayak was in good condition. The staff was friendly. It took us 31/2 hours with a stop for lunch but we are experienced kayakers. They made the process very easy and enjoyable. Things to bring: waterproof holder for your phone and car keys, water, lunch or snack. Wear quick dry clothes and sandals or shoes that can get wet .

American Players Theatre is a professional, classical theater located just outside Spring Green, Wisconsin. Situated on 110 acres of hilly woods and meadows, APT boasts two theater spaces, an 1148-seat outdoor amphitheater and the 200-seat indoor Touchstone Theatre. From June through October, APT produces eight plays in rotating repertory – five Up the Hill and three in the Touchstone Theatre.Central to APT’s mission is a commitment to making these great works accessible to as wide and varied an audience as possible as well as educating younger generations in the joys of these classic plays. With annual attendance of over 100,000 and an annual budget in excess of $5 million, APT ranks as the country’s second largest outdoor theater devoted to the classics.
My wife managed a thousand seat performing arts theatre, and would comment when asked: "I've seen more bad theatre than you have." This, at APT, is outstanding theatre! Arthur Miller tends to write "dark" plays, so we were prepared for a reserved evening. "A view from the bridge", fits the stereotype, but the production and cast were superb. Drive from Madison and enjoy the productions at this venue. We were very pleasantly surprised.

This is the holding spot for the tour. However, they have an excellent gift shop, and, much to our surprise, have a restaurant. We wold have eaten there prior to the tour, had we known.

You have to walk on a ramp through the treetops to reach the entrance of this remarkable house, built in the 1940s.
...And that makes it worth visiting. All those collections of dolls, dollhouses, circus stuff, musical machines, chandeliers, guns, sea/nautical things and sculpture, the largest carousel in history and the house itself with that infinity room are all very entertaining and interesting to see in one place. We went for a weekend, stayed at the House on the Rock inn (separate review on that one) and spent about 4 or 5 hours inside the museum the next day. There’s just sooo much to see! I’ve been to many museums in other parts of the world and I enjoyed this one the most! Very unique and I thought the layout to see section 1 to 3 was well planned. The Infinity room is one section of the house that we all liked. It’s scary to go to the tip of that overhang, but it’s a must I would say :) The house, with all the nooks and small lounge areas, we wonder how Alex Jordan made use of all those spaces, very interesting. I particularly enjoyed looking at the enormous amount of his doll and dollhouse collection and the musical machines! The carousel is pretty awesome too. I just loved the place, I think they are doing a great job maintaining it and I’m glad that we can enjoy this man’s life’s work and eccentricity up to this day.

This place may look small, but step inside and you can spend over an hour (or two or three) browsing the great selection of books they have. Well organized shelves and tables allow you to peruse their collection easily and they have some bestsellers at the forefront while at the same time drawing your attention to classics and unknown authors also. Check out their bargain baskets on the floor - I found some wonderful books there! They also include a great selection of cards and other little gift items that make this store a really nice shopping experience. And of course if you get hungry or need a cup of coffee during your browsing, The Kitchen is within. This will become a regular stop for me on my way through Spring Green now!

Nestled in the rolling hills just outside Spring Green is where Wilson Creek flows. Ashley Pfannenstiel is creating and selling her hand thrown functional stoneware in her studio and shop. Come enjoy the beauty of the valley, see the potter in action creating unique and colorful pieces, and shop for your kitchen and home or gifts for your friends. We are open daily 10am - 6pm.
Wilson Creek Pottery is about 5 miles outside of Spring Green and it is the most beautiful drive on a hilly countryside road. The pottery business is on a quaint site; cute farmhouse, a retail shop and the working area for making the pottery and a wonderful dog to greet you. We loved this a found some wonderful items to purchase.

We rented a canoe and kayak here the other day, and enjoyed an hour long tour of the Wisconsin river. I was a little apprehensive at letting our teenage daughter try kayaking out for the first time, but she was able to spend an hour paddling away while we were in a canoe trying to keep up with her pace.

...is talking about an entirely different town and store. I've lived in S.G. since 1998 (with my husband and son) and frequent the General store all of the time. My husband and I play music occasionally there as well. We love the place! It's actually one of the reasons we moved to Spring Green. We took the leap and are still here 16 years later.

The small, sandy preserve highlights remnant prairie and desert ecosystems. A pleasant 1.6-mile (one-way) trail winds up to the top of the bluff, affording very nice views of the river valley below. The prime feature of the landscape are the sandy areas with lots of cacti. The preserve is very quiet and there are usually no other people there. Not the most dramatic nature reserve in the world, but still makes for a very pleasant couple of hours visit. Take comfortable shoes, a hat, insect repellent, and camera.
