10 Things to do in Soufriere That You Shouldn't Miss

January 21, 2022 Alice Mieles

Soufriere's backdrop of the Pitons, sea and rainforest provides a picture perfect setting for a visit to this laid-back and relatively undeveloped town in the south of St. Lucia. Considering that its name is French for "sulphur," it should be no surprise to discover the wealth of hot springs and mineral baths. Other great spots to visit include Diamond Botanical Gardens, a slew of pretty beaches and the bike trails that wind through sugar plantation Anse Mamin. Rent a car to see the town.

Paul has a little slice of Heaven on a secluded beach that has zero tourists- just locals and travelers interested in authentic cultural experiences. We learned so much from Paul- he showed us how to cook a traditional meal using vegetables he grew on his farm. He told us abt the history of the island, the slave trade, his ancestors and how they taught him abt medicinal plants and Caribbean cooking. He gave us a tour of his farm and the forest but we still had plenty of time to just relax on the beach. We felt like we experienced the real St Lucia for a day- it was the highlight of our trip!

Petit Piton Trail

Reviewed By kelliecole

Climbing Petit Piton will be one of the best hikes I ever do. The St. Lucian forest, the technicality of the trail as it turns from root grabbing to rock face scaling with rope and guide assistance, and the view of the island from the top is one of the best. Ashley Walking Tree (758-722-2413) met us at the main road turn to Sugar Beach and guided the four of us foot by foot, hand hold by hand hold for the next four hours. We are all in good physical shape, started the hike at 7:30am and were finished by 12:30. None of us had experienced a hike quite like this before and Walking Tree made it possible. He takes his job seriously and was able to help me (who's a shorter person) and people in our group who are sometimes afraid of heights. Without him the hike would have been much more difficult, and perhaps longer as the trail is not marked. Walking Tree's demeanor is calm, tells you we'll warm up the body for the first 1/4 of the trail, gauges comfort levels and offers step by step guidelines of how to easily work with the mountain to climb it. It was a great experience with him and I highly recommend the challenge. Walking Tree has 17 years experience hiking Petit Piton and has been teaching his son, Hennison (758-714-4213) to do the same. They can be reached at either number. We scheduled our trip only a day in advance.

Anse Mamin

An old sugar plantation with a knot of bike trails along the estate.

We took a day trip to Anse Mamin from our resort (Ladera) via pre-arranged water taxi. We paid the $36 for two chairs under an umbrella on the visitor side of the beach (the other side is reserved for resort guests), and enjoyed our day tremendously. The snorkling was good (and uncrowded early) and the whole atmosphere was enjoyable. The burgers served by a lovely little on-beach restaurant were SO good. All in all, it's well worth a day!

Gros Piton Nature Trail

Reviewed By CynSS - Plano, United States

We hiked with our adult children, there were eight of us. The kids made it to the top before us. This was a very difficult hike as a great percentage of it was truly vertical! It felt like a 2 hour stair master workout on the highest and most difficult setting! The views were wonderful and worth it!! Bring lots of water!! Our guide was great yet the one the kids had was not the greatest! He started rushing us from the minute we drove up, not even letting me go back and get my cap! I should have put my foot down and not listened. 5 minutes after the kids got to the top, he was asking them to leave and start the descent. They said they wanted to wait for us and he responded that they weren’t even sure if we would make it to the top. They insisted on waiting and actually enjoying the view and recover from the hike. Overall, I would recommend if you are an avid and experienced hiker. We are regular hikers and this kicked my behind!
