I am a history buff, as you know. So I couldn't miss the Thunder Tower during my short visit to Smolensk. It is situated in the south-western part of the fortress. It is called thunder because it used to be a powderhouse. Now it is a military museum. The entrance is from the ground floor (literally) from the inner side of the fortress. The museum covers the military history of the middle ages mainly. From one of the upper levels one can enter a short stretch of the fortress wall.

I can proudly brag about covering the whole length of the fortress wall. I did not do it at once. It took me several years to do that. In the past some sections were neglected. Anyone could climb over there and walk amid piles of garbage. This time I was pleasantly surprised to see a well-kept wall.

This park with a French sounding name (that has nothing to do with French) is conveniently located in the heart of Smolensk. In 1917 it witnessed the social upheavals of two revolutions - rallies. After the Great Patriotic War a trophy statues were placed here from Hermann Goering's estates in East Prussia. I walked through the Blonye garden several times, I couldn't miss it. But I never stopped and reflected upon the surroundings, which I miss now.
