Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge

Reviewed By PortlandKLS - Portland, United States

I have walked most of the trails in this refuge repeatedly. I love how comfortable the path surfaces are and how most paths are level with virtually no grade. As large as the refuge is, you will still hear road noise and the Tualatin river is anything but scenic. However, it still feels fairly remote, and there is enough wildlife to add interest to the walk. Bring binoculars to spot most as the larger birds (eagles, raptors etc) tend to congregate in the center of the refuge away from the trails. Watch your step as there are sometimes small reptiles on the paths. If you walk at a reasonable clip, and don’t stop too long at any signage, you should be able to do the more treed path, near the river, in an hour. The is a steep spur path to a hill top view point that can be fun. However, the view is becoming obstructed by the trees these days. A little disappointing, but this is a wildlife refuge, first, after all. I have been here seven or eight times and have not yet seen any animal larger than an eagle or duck. But check in at the visitors’ center first and ask if there are other sightings. If you go others, I recommend talking in hushed tones for the best chance to spot critters.

My wife and I did the wine flight and cheese board, two types of cheeses, hazelnuts, and crackers plus berries. Their tasting room + outdoor area was quite a bit larger than other wineries i had been too in the area. We noticed people had larger groups as well as a good place for families to bring young kids on a nice day as they can play in the grassy area. Several picnic tables and multiple pairs of adirondack chairs to sit in on the law and overlook mount hood. We were there closer to 5:30 pm and they could have been busier b/c they don't close until 7 pm, where others close at 4 or 5. They had a white Pinot Noir that was delicious and other wineries we toured didn't offer that on their flight.

We picked this the day after a formal wine tour (soooo expensive) and just took an Uber there. We were so pleasantly surprised and recommend. The gardens are maintained by the owner and look beautiful. If you join their club you go down to a lower patio by an infinity pool. The overlook is beautiful; the wines wonderful. I can not say enough about the recommendation for people to go there!

Our group of 6 left Beaverton OR, within a short drive through scenic country side with gorgeous sweeping view, stepped out of our cars and landed in Italy. The ground is magnificent! Beautifully lined paths, fountains, gardens, glorious hydrangeas. There is even a villa (occupied by the owner) with an inviting gate. We arrived at 11 am, with their staff still fresh and ready for the busy day since the weather was just gorgeous. We enjoyed the wine tasting in the shaded sitting area. The staff is friendly and perfect with the flights. They even did a delicious pairing for our last wine. We relaxed, walked over to visit their goats. A friendly winery dog was around to greet us. Most of us enjoyed the estate 2015 pinot noir. $20 pp tasting fee, that is waived only if you purchase 3 bottles of wine.
