Galt Preserve

Reviewed By baseballover - Florissant, United States

Galt Preserve is certainly worth the drive to get there, and it was quite enjoyable on the afternoon that I visited. It was very windy when I was there, but I think it was just the weather for the day. The path was dry, but I was here in March, and the sign said that at certain times of the year it could be underwater or extremely muddy. I only walked one short path at the end of the preserve, but it was very interesting to me since I am not from the area, and I saw so many things I would never see in St. Louis. Thankfully, I did not run across any feral hogs, which the signs that I could, nor alligators. Although, at one point on the path there was a lot of rustling in the bush and I thought I might run into a hog, but it was just the wind. They have a single outhouse/Porta potty, and it was pretty clean, not smelly, it had toilet paper, and hand sanitizer - all pluses! There are several picnic areas, too. This would be a great and extremely quiet place to spend an afternoon, walk, watch some birds, have a picnic. I did not run into any bugs, mosquitos, or any other irritating insects, but that may have been because I was there during the “dry season“. Galt Preserve is on Pine Island, the largest island off Florida’s Gulf Coast, and to get there he need to go through Matlacha, a very small tourist town which was extremely crowded on a Sunday. But once you get through there the island is more wild on the way to Galt. I think Matlacha would be a very cool place to stop, as it has a lot of shops and little restaurants and every building is a different bright color.

St. Jude Nature Trail

Reviewed By conniew2017 - Saint James City, United States

It's like walking in a shaded arbor. Lots of benches to rest on. A great place to walk dogs on a leash. They also have doggy poo bags at the beginning of the trail. A beautiful new bridge to cross over onto the path. Also 2 separate covered picnic areas well maintained.
