Port Saint Joe is located in Gulf County, Florida. Its sheltered bay, along with farms in Apalachicola, just to the south, provide a significant percentage of oysters and scallops for local and national consumers. Also a big fishing town known, Port Saint Joe has many charter companies that provide access to some of the best off-shore fishing in the Gulf. Famous for its speckled trout, redfish and tarpon, Port Saint Joe offers the perfect fishing expedition.

One of the top beaches in 1995.
We camped here for 3 nights in February. We were in the Shady Pines campground, site 73. This is a good site, private and backs up to the woods. The only problem is the park decided to burn off underbrush and the fire got away from them. About 75% of the campground was burned up, with the trees and bushes having a lot of damage. This is a shame because it was a very pretty location. Now you look at black fire scars everywhere. It might come back but it will take a couple years. The campground is also low. It had rained for 2 days before we got there and there was still standing water everywhere. It was too cold for mosquitoes and no seeums in February but I imagine there are plenty later in the year.
The campground has a great location with a boardwalk to the beach. It is connected to the other campground by a boardwalk too. There are two bathhouses and although they are old they were clean. There aren't many hikes in the park except along the beach. We did one going into the Wilderness Preserve from the campground but it was not worth the effort. Mostly sand and not much shade. There is no access to the bay in this area of the park, just a swampy marsh area. I wouldn't want to do the hike in the summer when it is hot and the bugs are out.
Most of the campers when we were there were retirees from up north. We were the youngest people in the campground!
They don't allow dogs on the beach which is unfortunate. We will come back but will try the Gulf Breeze campground and hope it is better.

So Cape San Blas is a General area near the AF base, but we recently hiked from 30B to the True “Cape of Blas.” It was a little over a mile, great beach hike, managed only by foot since you have to climb over downed trees. Also, I believe it’s part of the AF base. Overall, good hike, wonderful beach and cape, lots of shells.

Serving the best local seafood in Mexico Beach since 1965. We offer fresh or steamed shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs, and oysters; a large variety of seashells, t-shirts, and novelty gifts, and we'll pack seafood for travel.
If you are in need of fresh seafood in Mexico Beach, this is your place. Shrimp, and fresh caught fish. They have red snapper, grouper and tuna...they have a delicious smoked tuna dip! They steam your shrimp in your choice of seasonings. Owners very friendly. They also have a gift shop on sight.

A scenic drive is to be found along US 98.
We drove the Big Bend Scenic Byway (US Hwy 98) from Tallahassee to Apalachicola. It was a mostly two-lane road through pine forest, small towns and coastal villages, and miles of unspoiled seashore. There was very little traffic and I'm so glad we decided to take the extra time to drive this scenic route instead of the interstate. We stopped at Carrabelle Beach to walk the shoreline and were the only ones there (restrooms and picnic tables available). Nearby we paused to admire the Crooked River Lighthouse. At Eastpoint we saw a bald eagle sitting in a tree right beside the road - a sight I'll never forget. This scenic drive just whet my appetite to go back and see more.

Horseback Riding on one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. Morning, evening, sunset and full moon rides available all year. Call for reservations.
We went on an 11am horseback ride that started at Serenity Park with 2 new friends we had met while vacationing at Cape San Blas. Julie was our guide and was very informative and friendly. The horses were great! I rode Wiz, who although he was an older horse, was happiest when he had no other horse in front of him. My husband rode Pitchfork, another awesome horse, very easy to handle. It was lovely to be able to ride right on the beach. Would love to ride with Rockin M again!

Last time I was here they hadn't gotten it moved yet. Stop in at visitor center and get the scoop on what they went through. She is so informed of the history of this beautiful light. You'll miss much of the history and the beauty if it is closed. There's not much point in my writing it. Enjoy the experience anew for yourself. Join the FL lighthouse Assc. and the US Lighthouse Assc.. I've traveled all over for years to visit them. Many years back, they implemented a passport program. Great for getting the younger set involved in the history of what I consider some of our most precious landmarks. You can theme an entire vacation around a lighthouse visit. I've seen all in the Southeast, some in AK, Canada, Maine,CA. Delaware and others. I never tire of seeing another. It is addicting. You can even book stays at a few.

We stumbled upon this park while exploring the Port St. Joe area, not realizing until we read the monument that Florida's constitution was written in this area. The park is very simple, just a large piece of property, lined with very mature trees that lead your eyes to the ocean. It would be a nice place for a picnic or quiet outing.

This lighthouse is a replica constructed on top of a private residence. Please respect the owners property and privacy by taking photos from areas accessible to the public.
This light has a long and unusual past. It has been bought and sold several times with the last owner adding the replica light to the top of their private home.
While you cannot get in to look at the light, it is still a nice see.
I recommend this as a brief stop for lighthouse lovers.
