Most of the area is on fire right now. Some roads variably open and closed. Very, very smoky. If you have always wanted to visit this area for boating or fishing - go another time. It's a lovely area, but poor visibility and very poor air quality due to smoke.

MoAM calls itself The Smithsonian Of The West, and that's not far off the mark, if we think of the Smithsonian as Grandma's attic and Grandpa's garage. Collections of war memorabilia, bicycles, Area 51 space alien paraphernalia, a complete old dental shop, early helicopters, music folios, snowmobiles -- the list goes on because the collection continues to grow. The owners are fiercely loyal to the principles of democracy and what it takes to maintain a civil society. One hopes the civil society reminders rub off on visitors as they are reminded of a kinder and gentler past.

As others have stated it is worth the few minute drive out of Polson and it was also a little hard to find. Once there, between the overlook and stairs, it takes about 20 minutes total up and down. Once down the stairs, look down the river and you will see a road that will take you down to the river. It is easy to find. You will only park and walk about 100 feet to the river.
Directions to the overlook and stairs. When you turn onto Kerr Dam road from the highway, you won't see a well marked sign from the highway or on the dirt road so look for the Lake county refuse site and that is where you turn off from the paved highway. From the highway go 2 miles on the Kerr Dam dirt road. Then there will be a confusing native American sign. Turn there and it is ONE mile to the parking area at the top of a hill. (See my pictures for information). From downtown Polson, the dam and river is actually very close. It's only about 3 miles to get to that dirt road turn off.

I had an amazing day kayaking out to Wild Horse Island. My guide was Avrey, and he was the best. He was very knowledgable about the area, history, and well travelled. We saw the wild horses ( a miracle because the island is so big) goats, and deer!! The two mile paddle was beautiful and it was a perfect day. I highly recommend this guiding company. They are warm, fun, and they deliver. They are also priced right. I have nothing but glowing things to say!!!

This is a must see. The owner calls his shop the "smallest outlet shop" He has so many different types of items in this small, quaint shop. From Down quilts and pillows to socks and taffy. Bob, the owner, will sometimes bring out his accordion, and play and old Montana favorite. In the summer you can buy tickets to ride the "Happy Hippo" a large water vessel that will take you out on beautiful Flathead Lake for a wet and wild adventure. A unique experience. You will enjoy the staff. They are extremely service oriented and very friendly.

We provide safe flying scenic air tours for the general public. Our flights are over the Mission Mountains and Flathead Lake area. Our pilots provide a narrative on local activities, valley development, and history. Our flights are approximately 1 Hr or 1.5 Hrs of flight time and hold up to 3 passengers.
After my brother had such a good flying experience in Colorado with Joe, my wife Evi and I decided to fly into Montana to do some fly instruction in Montana's Big Sky with Blue Goose Aviation. It has been wonderful experience due to Joe's care and expertise, which has taken us to so many interesting places, including an excellent choice of hotels and restaurants. It has been a week demanding for more, so we will have to come back from Austria! Otto Urbanek,

Out where the world is still wild, you'll find our bright yellow creamery by the bay where we create artisanal cheeses by hand in small batches. When the weather allows, we use solar thermal heat to pasteurize our locally collected milk. From our recycled Island shirts to our vat or the sun, we're all about making the best use of what's around us.
This was the first time I've ever partaken in a cheese tasting! The shop is down a dead-end street, so you might think you're not in the right area...just keep driving, and you'll see it at the end of the cul-de-sac.
The woman who conducted our tasting did a great job providing us with a brief explanation of the cheese making process, and gave us a little hand-out explaining the various flavors and ingredients in the cheeses we were tasting.
We went home with a package of garlic cheese curds (which were gone in an hour) and a wedge of the Big Chai Gouda. This is definitely a stop for all the cheese-lovers out there!

This place is run by the artists whose work is on display, so the vibe is great! You will see jewelry, pottery, watercolor, sculpture, acrylics, and more. I found a great pair of earrings for my daughter and we found several paintings we liked.
The hold regular exhibitions so be sure to check their website. They hold workshops, and they give back to the local budding artists with scholarships. LOTS of great stuff going on here, so make it part of your Polson experience!
