Montevideo, a port city and the capital of Uruguay, is a perfect destination for travelers looking for a relaxing stroll past colonial era buildings and along beautiful beaches. The Ciudadela Gateway, the only remaining section of the wall that once surrounded the entire city, now serves as the entrance to Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's oldest neighborhood. Home to churches, museums, and theaters, at night the area comes alive with nightclubs playing Tango and Candombe music for crowds of dancers.

This fashionable seaside neighborhood has all the amenities: shopping malls, movies, restaurants and bars.
We had two days in Montevideo. On day one, we explored the old town and markets and on day two, we cycled here for lunch and to visit the Montevideo sign at the eastern end of the beach.

This museum is about 6 miles from the old town quarter of Montevideo or about 3 miles from the tourist hotel section. About a 10 minute cab ride or a 30 minute walk along the coast. The museum has a nice park outside and is right on the coast. It is completely self-guided. Entry requires a 40 Uruguayan Peso "donation"- about US $1. Well worth it, to preserve this gem. Inside, there are artifacts related to general Spanish / Columbian maritime history, Uruguayan naval history and Antarctica, but the star attractions undoubtedly have to do with the Battle of the River Plate, 1939, when the German pocket battleship, the Graf Spee, faced off against the British South Atlantic squadron (HMS Exeter, Ajax and Achilles) and came off second-best, resulting in the first major British naval victory of WWII. They have a 45 minute movie about the battle at the museum. It's in Spanish and on a loop, although there's an English version if you ask. Well worth a 45 minute to 1.5 hour ramble through.

This is a very popular tourist attraction as everyone wants their picture taken here with the backdrop of the beach and skyline. It is located in the bay area of Pocitos. The sign often changes colors as it is painted to support different causes.
