"Pau has the most beautiful land view in the same way that Naples has the most beautiful sea view" (« Pau est la plus belle vue de terre comme Naples est la plus belle vue de mer »).
Enough said.
You have to be here and feel that you are part of history.

Between sea and Mountains, next to the Pyrenees and Spain, the Pau-Pyrénées whitewater stadium welcomes you all year long. Try canoeing, kayak, rafting, whitewater swimming. A pool for beginners 4 rivers with different flows. recreation and picnic areas.
This is one of two white water stadiums in France. It is certified for world championships in Kayak and Canoe. It is modern, nicely situated close to Pau on the side of the Gave river, has a restaurant and excellent facilities. It essentially is an artificial water circuit, for which eh level/speed of water can be moderated to allow for different levels of complexity. At the finish, there is an escalator belt which lifts the boats or rafts back to the start. You can come here to enjoy watching professionals compete (or train), or make use of the many possibilities for amateur white water activity, including rafting.

Laurent Poublan of Pau is an excellent canyon guide; a masterful rigger; and dynamic individual.
I went canyoning with Laurent and his team as a day trip out of Pau and the entire experience was fantastic. Laurent organised all the transport and access as well as perfect training. Inside the canyon he was in his element and clearly controlled the entire process.
The equipment was perfect and the safety absolute.
A definite must do experience if you are in this part of the world.

Louis-Philippe, who held dear the celebration of French historical memorabilia, wanted Pau, so linked to the memory of Henri IV, to be part of this artistic programme, and a major contribution to his political credibility. Himself unable to visit the site, the king kept abreast of the work at his Bearnaise residence, while the Dukes of Orléans, Némours and Montpensier were entertained there with all due ceremony. The important purveyors to the Crown created an original suite of furniture in the then fashionable neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style for the chateau of Pau. These furnishings are an example of the authentic decoration of a royal abode under the July Monarchy. The tapestries on show at the château of Pau are, virtue of their number and quality, one of the most valuable collections in France.
We got the last French guided tour of the day (you can have other language options just written) . Entrance was 7 euros and the visit lasted less than 30 minutes, inside the old kitchen, dining rooms, bedrooms, etc. During summer there are light shows on the evening for free.

Every week there are different events held at the circuit for cars and motorbikes. Track days, testing and racing. Spectators can view most of the circuit from the stands. The circuit continues to be improved all the time. Set on a hillside the circuit is very undulating so very popular with the drivers.

Do not expect much from this museum. There are some nice old masters paintings and a beautiful Albert Marquet painting. Also some Art Deco sculptures. But on the whole most works are second rate with an emphasis on late XIXTH century painters.
