When we thought of exploring Hita City in Ooita Prefecture, we decided to stay at an onsen village close to the city rather than stay inside the city. We made the right decision to choose Tsuetate onsen about twenty kilometers away just past the border with Kumamoto Prefecture. I took an early stroll around the village. Here you can find the features of a traditional onsen village along a river and many onsen ryokans on both sides of the river bank. Compared with the modern and luxurious onsen places such as Beppu, Yufuin and Kurokawa in Ooita Prefecture Tsuetate reminds me how onsen villages used to be when my parents took me on a holiday when I was a child. At the corner of the village you find a jizou which is a kind Buddhist monk that will protect the villagers. From the bridge over the river you can get an excellent view of the village as well as enjoy a splendid view of the surrounding mountains.

This is one of the easiest walk and be the closest to a waterfall. Entrance fee of 300 Yen is well worth it because the toilet is clean and the walkway is well maintained. Must visit on your way to Kumamoto.
