Dog Mountain is a nonprofit set on 150 acres on a private mountain top spot in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The grounds are open from dawn til dusk to people and their dogs. Artist Stephen Huneck and his wife, Gwen, bought the property in 1995. They turned the barn into studio space. After Stephen’s unique visionary experience, the world famous Dog Chapel was built. The unspoiled haven is covered with hiking trails and dog ponds. Wildflowers abound in the summer and snow-shoeing is a favorite activity in the winter. Year after year, the Dog Chapel and the Stephen Huneck Gallery get more and more visitors from all over the world. Leashes are optional on Dog Mountain. Dogs are not just welcome here, they are cherished! Dogs are free to run, play, swim and, best of all, meet other dogs! It's great to hear from travelling visitors and local residents alike how much Dog Mountain means to them and their dogs.

Artist and author Stephen Huneck created the one-of-a-kind Dog Chapel to be in his words, “A place where people can go and celebrate the spiritual bond they have with their dogs. It is the largest artwork of my life and the most personal.” Thousands of people from around the world visit the Dog Chapel each year. The interior walls are covered floor to ceiling with photos, drawings, letters, and keepsakes left as memorials to beloved departed pets. The chapel is a place of quiet and colorful beauty, gentle humor, and profound love. A visit there is a unique and moving experience for all animal lovers. “When you visit the Dog Chapel you are totally enveloped with messages of love. It is a very moving experience - sad, certainly, but also uplifting - to see how much everyone cherishes his or her dog. Grieving for a lost dog is one aspect of the Dog Chapel, but equally important is celebrating the joy of living and the bond between dogs and their owners.” -Stephen Huneck
For anyone who ever loved and lost their dog, this place will be a must if you are in the area. The beautiful chapel was built to honor all dogs. It was sad and heart warming to see all the notes left by dog owners for their departed pets. The store has many dog gift items to choose from. There are walking paths too. Check out the web site. The site is just off the main road where the statue is located. I hope this helps.

Nestled in the northern corner of Vermont and the serenity of East Burke's countryside, Burke Mountain Resort is a playground for adventure. Seasonal offerings include Ski / Ride, Ski Lessons, Downhill Mountain Bike Park and lift fed trails. Year round community and resort events will round out your perfect getaway.
My wife and I ski regularly at Burke Mt...On weekdays, we roll out of bed from our nearby house as late as we like and are on the Mt. by 10...and its all yours...There are no lines, no crowds, even the celebrated ski academy (Mikaela Shiffrin trained there) has its own dedicated lift and trail. When it is fully open (takes a bit longer than the mega resorts) the upper mountain provides a sweet variety of well groomed dark blues that tend to go straight down the mountain and are therefor quite consistently challenging for the average intermediate. I can't speak for the quality of the tree skiing, nor the ungroomed blacks, but suspect that they don't compare to big brother Jay; 40 minutes or so up the road. But if you have young uns with you or are a novice adult, the lower mountain is one of the more perfect places to develop skills. There is a moving carpet for beginners (not teeny-tiny either), followed by a T-bar which opens a substantial novice slope. Once you master that run, you can take the lower mountain chair, which opens a wide but lengthy green, perfect for further skill development with even two light blues available. The whole is perhaps among the best beginning to novice area in Vermont and the main chair is modern and fast. Combine all of this with being able to observe the training of some of the hottest, young skiers in the world, a new large scale hotel situated right between the upper and lower mountain and you have the perfect recipe for a family ski week. And weekends? Yeah, there are a few more people, you might have to wait 45 seconds to get on the lift.

A 2,751-foot summit that offers a clearly marked seven-mile, round-trip hiking trail.
This is a wonderful little hike (under 5 miles) up a mountain with a great view point (the NORTH spur view is best) and further on good southern views.

I visited Jay Peak for two days with three 19-year-olds and one 15 year old. We all enjoyed the waterpark immensely; it was very clean, the water temperature was perfect, having the open air on a hot July day was epic. Very little surprises me when it comes to Jay Peak and this indoor/outdoor waterpark is perfect for everyone! Can’t wait to go back.

Very easy and nice ride from the town waterfront along the beautiful lake, Prouty Beach is a good stop to cool down along the way with even a disc golf course.

This was a beautiful hideaway the view of the lake is amazing . We spent a lot of time walking our dog and sitting on a very well placed bench watching the city , the big church and the boats go by . It was so pretty we decided to stay two nights and were sad to leave.. everywhere we went in Vermont the people were nothing short of kind , friendly , helpful -- wonderful people . The state is so green and beautiful so many trees .

Jay Peak should be on everyone's list of top mountain resorts in the North East. The mountain is large and features a great variety of terrain - there is more expert terrain than beginner terrain, but everyone will be able to find a run that fits their style and ability level. The tree skiing is some of the best in the North East without question. The lift system could use some updates but is well laid out. The resort itself offers a variety of activities including an indoor waterpark, rock climbing, an ice rink, golf and more. There is a good variety of lodging and dining at the resort as well. The mountain is rather remote and far from many of the major metropolitan areas which helps limit the crowds but also makes travel a bit difficult.
