LaM Lille Metropole Musee d'art moderne, d'art contemporain et d'art brut.

Set in a remarkable sculpture park, the LaM has established a unique itinerary for visitors, highlighting the intersection between modern art, contemporary art and art brut. With over 7,000 works, the museum provides a striking overview of the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. By encouraging new ways of interacting and thinking about art, whether through its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions or cultural programme, the museum is focused on sparking your sense of curiosity, and leaves you feeling inspired and moved. Inaugurated in 1983 to house the modern art donation bequeathed by Geneviève and Jean Masurel, the LaM has since emerged as a leading museum on the world stage. Boasting an ambitious programme, it encourages encounters between artists who not only bear witness to their time, but weave a deeply personal perspective into their work.

Musee La Piscine

Reviewed By editorgoodlifefrance - Kent, United Kingdom

La Piscine was the municipal swimming pool for the city, built in 1932. It operated into the 1990s when the city really needed a new, modern pool and rather than let this incredible art deco wonder go to rot, it was turned into a museum. The architect also transformed the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, a former train station. It is sensational, retaining the pool, changing rooms, the mosaic art deco glories and filling the museum with wonderful artworks, Picasso, Claudel & so many more The Henri Bouchard atelier is breath-taking, filled with his sculptures. It really looks as if the great artist just popped out and is coming back any time. Next door, a room encourages visitors to touch art, feel it as a sculptor would, the lines and flaws, the coldness of marble or bronze. And don't forget to enjoy lunch in the lovely restaurant and a famous waffle! It's seriously one of the best museums I've ever been to.

Good use of the limited space with some excellent exhibits, detailed narrative around the props and clear chronological design of the events leading up to and surrounding Operation Dynamo. Was quite busy when we went there, as for some reason it was free entry!

Musee des Beaux-Arts Valenciennes

Reviewed By Beto79 - Lille, France

There is an excellent exhibition called "The history of the world in 100 objects from the British Museum" that will last until July. I was very impressed by this exhibition. The quality and importance of some of the objects is quite remarkable. Commentary is presented in French and English and it is an activity that you can do in one hour and half. The rest of the museum is Ok. It's strength is the Flemish painters (Rubens) and a large selection of sculptures. The neoclassical building is in a nice area of the city. On Saturdays there is a nice open air market behind the museum. Definitively, Valenciennes is a nice day trip from Lille.

Lovely long weekend destination. Great architecture - look for square beyond Place de Lion ( Place de Louise Bernieries?) for interesting Flemish style frontages. Feels safe, relaxed easy going city, with plenty of restaurants through the old town. Do book in advance though or risk walking from one to another looking for a table at weekends.

My friend and I visited the Calais area on a day trip and decided to drive uo to Dunkirk for a walk around. The beach is vast, with soft sand and a slightly emotional feel to it, as you stroll along freely, remembering what the soldiers who charged off the boats faced in WWII. There is plenty of space for children to run about, and lots of places to eat along the promenade, but our visit was to see the beach.

Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille

Prestigious art museum features works of Goya, Donatello and Veronese along with German paintings and sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Reviewed By Stevewfoster - Reading, United Kingdom

The collection isn't huge but it's varied and really good. The relief maps of the old towns in the lower ground, the sculptures around the atrium and the paintings on the first floor provided a couple of interesting and enjoyable hours. The helpful guy on the ticket desk said that if we had Eurostar tickets we would get a 2 for 1 price. We did, so the cost of admission was 4 euros for both of us.
