One of the world’s fashion capitals, Milan offers endless opportunities for chic shopping. Hit the artsy neighborhood of Brera for leather goods and Via Monte Napoleone for exclusive, expensive boutiques. The enchanting mosaics and glass vaults of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II make shoppers feel like they’re wandering inside a painting. Take break from your spree to gape at the iconic Duomo, then grab tickets to a performance at La Scala. Post-opera, the Navigli district pulses with late-night activity.

After a series of (unusual) WhatsApp messages, a few weeks before, we were able to reserve a 9pm slot on Monday evening. As we had only arrived in Milan that day, and were staying in a different area, we allowed ourselves (too much) time to locate the bar. We were an hour early, so we enjoyed a glass of wine at a nearby bar, before knocking on the hatch of BackDoor43 at 8:55pm. We were greeted with a narrow opening of the hatch and a brusque request for our names, before being bluntly informed we were too early and to come back in 10 minutes! A short, pleasant walk around the Naviglio Grande, whilst we discussed the customer service(!), and we were back. We were not disappointed! Put aside the "rules" of making a good first impression re: booking, arrival and a door that eerily opens with no-one to greet you - this behaviour just adds to the experience! Rest assured, that once inside, we found Matteo to be a wonderful host. His knowledge of his craft, the theatrics, and the wonderfully intimate setting makes this imbibing experience one to remember! Matteo was hospitable in answering all of our questions - the ones that he probably gets asked a half dozen or so times a day - and as the night wore on, he was a fount of knowledge about the history of Milan and the greater areas of Italy, his passion for the topic clearly on show! Thank you, Matteo - your cocktails, your skills, your conversation and the overall ambience of the bar made this a wonderfully unique experience!

This area in Milan offers reasonably-priced restaurants and some of the city's most exciting nightclubs.
The canal path is a lovely setting for an afternoon stroll - as I did - or you can come here after 6pm when the evenings liven up with happy hour for food and drink at the many bars and restaurants that line the paths. It's a picturesque setting with walkways both sides of the canal and various bridges on route to stop and take photos from.
