10 Things to Do in Montauk That You Shouldn't Miss

November 12, 2017 Milan Banda

A 200-year-old lighthouse serves as a beacon for the Long Island town of Montauk, where fishing, beachcombing, kayaking and surfing vie for your attention. Pack a camera and binoculars for seal watching walks in Montauk Point State Park during the winter. Second House, a 1700s cottage built for East Hampton shepherds, adds to the local history. Summer season brings live music to the town's pubs and cafes. Hither Hills State Park provides access to ocean swimming, a 40-acre freshwater pond and camp sites.

Montauk Point Lighthouse

Located on the tip of Long Island, the oldest lighthouse in New York State offers a museum, gift shop and tours.

Even though there were quite some people with us, I felt completely at ease at this spot. You get a fantastic view of the ocean (especially when you go to the top of the lighthouse which is very worth it). I had my binoculars with me and I was observing the landscapes for around 15 minutes. Before we did a horseback riding tour at the beach whcih was also very great. Pure nature and fresh air, this feels very good after having been in NYC for a couple of days lol.

Montauk Point State Park

Reviewed By NascarMom5 - Long Island, New York

Late September Saturday, the weather was 80 degrees the park was packed. My review is based on the park, not the lighthouse. They take advantage and charge $8 parking, no big deal. But when I can't climb 137 stairs, nor make it up the incline to the museum why would you charge $11.00 per adult? Great beaches for walking and views, not swimming. If you want swimming go to Hither Hills State Park, separate entrance fee.

Hither Hills State Park

Reviewed By Laurenlove82 - Miller Place, New York

Stayed from 6/9/17-6/11/17 at site G15. When we pulled up to the site you could see it was littered with garbage and food all around the perimeter of the cement slab and broken glass all around the picnic table on the slab. Didn't realize people were such slobs here, however the staff came right over and cleaned it up. I live on Long Island and camp frequently and would never leave a site like that, plus I would've thought since checkout is at 11am and checkin is at 3pm the campground would've checked that the site was "clear".

Regardless the campground itself is amazing because your are right at the beach. Bathrooms are top notch for a campground and fairly hush hush at the quite time 10pm.

I would say I probably didn't have the best spot in terms of people just walking right thru my campsite because we were located right at one of the beach entrances. Which honestly doesn't or wouldn't have bothered me much but when people are blatantly rude and don't even say hi while your standing right there it is definitely a bit odd. Being the "rude" NYer I am, I made sure to yell out Hi to all who passed thru.

Don't buy the wood from the campground, not seasoned. Was able to get a fire going but it took some time and lots of smoke. I don't believe they allow fires during peak season though.

All in all great campground, if your looking to beach it all day or have access to town then this is an amazingly cheap option! Oh and fortunately for use NO TICKS, none at all!!!

Visited Gosmans for dinner with 2 other couples on our vacation on Montauk. Probably the best seafood we had anywhere on our trip. 2 of the couples had lobster for 2, and raved about it. Our swordfish, and fluke were equally as good. Not cheap by any means, but that's Montauk

The views from the park and the paths along the plains offer stunning ocean views. Bring a camera and a sweater, it does get windy.

We hiked Battery 113 Road, which was cool. It was a little weird that about 100 yards into the trail you walked through a hole in the chain link fence. Don't worry folks, that's the trail.

The trail is very very well marked in most places. You crossed over 6 wooden bridges (2 x 8s). Then you hit one of the roads and you're kind of on your own. Undortunately, we did not see any wildlife at all. We walked down to the water on to what was old Montauk Highway, which we thought was pretty cool, and back to the radar tower to where we began. About 1.5 mile hike, some nice views.

We decided to take a weekend trip from Philadelphia to Long Island to try the numerous new breweries. Montauk brewery has a great selection of beers and they do both growlers and crowlers to go. The tap room is tiny and they have no food. There is outdoor space during nice weather. They have some nice brewery swag to purchase

If staying near/in Montauk Village, you can walk to this park from your motel/condo. Well marked trails (although some a bit rutted in places), not strenuous at all, leading to a stunning beach view on the bluffs. Remember though, wear long pants and sleeves to avoid being bitten by a deer tick - they are abundant in this area.

The waterline is very rocky and the beach somewhat pebbly. The view is fabulous. We take our beach chairs up onto the jetty and watch all the boats coming and through the inlet. We come here every year and never tire of the beach, the jetty and the endless line of yachts coming and going.

Kirk Park Beach

This beach has free parking but as others have said, get there early. There are restrooms by the parking lot. There is a shower, but more for getting sand off as it it outside the restroom building. IGA supermarket next to the parking lot and a 7 11 across the road. Short walk to the Montauk "Main Street" which has a good number of restaurants. There are a couple of motels near by for those who want to stay longer.
The beach itself is beautiful and this is why this area is always high on the list for the most beautiful beaches. Would love to go back. Lifeguard on duty when we went.
In regards to pets, they are not allowed 9 to 6, from May 15 to the end of September.
