My friends and I were returning from Mt Asama to Tokyo, stopped at a Highway Oasis in Gunma Prefecture when he remembered Tomihiro Museum was in the vicinity. With help of maps, and directions from locals, we finally found ourselves on Route 122, heading toward Tomihiro Hoshino's home village of Azuma. It was the perfect day (Thurs) to visit - non-peak season. In the quiet and beautiful setting of the museum, we soaked in his story (through pictures, exhibits, video), savoured his amazing artwork and poetry. English translations of his poems were a great help for me to appreciate his thought, feelings, struggles. If I were to just focus on his painting, I can easily conclude that his painting is superb and forget that he is paralysed from neck down, and paints such beautiful pieces with his mouth. I was awed and humbled that he whom many would have thought wasted his life (when he suffered an accident at age 24) was given a second chance at life. Through his suffering and pain is birthed a depth of life many can only wish for. Truly, he inspired me that day!

An aging zoo and amusement park geared for kids, it is in a remote part of Gunma and can take a while to get to. Locals will enjoy it, but tourists will probably want to avoid it. The rides are about 100 yen each, so it's pretty cheap, but Isesaki's Kezoji park offers better rides. However, this place also runs a nice, if a little old, zoo, which is interesting.

A nice indoor pool that is often crowded, but offers a few big slides and a wave pool. Good for kids and couples and people that love pools. Just avoid the old men that stare at bikinis.

The zoo is quite good for a free, local zoo. There are basic exotic animals and a small aquarium. The zoo is aging, and some playground things may be very rusty, but renovations happen from time to time and the zoo is generally well maintained. The amusement park is expensive for what it is, but the zoo has to be supported somehow. The rides are fast-paced, so not suitable for toddlers, but are not generally aimed at pleasing adults. There are many entertaining 50 yen rides for the very young.

I visited this place toward the end of May. The only living thing I saw inside the glass building (the main attraction?) were about three or four kinds of butterflies, tens or hundreds of which are constantly flying right over your head or immediately around you. I got some great photos of them. Perhaps, a larger variety of butterflies can be seen depending on the month or season one visits. That having been said, the building itself houses a vast collection of various dead butterflies. The hills and forest around the glass building have a trail network, which is decent for getting exercise and/or seeing dragonflies (and I guess--although I didn't see them--other critters). Unfortunately, whether or not you only want to take a walk, or also enter the exhibit and glassed building with the butterflies, either or both will cost you 400 yen. If the cost were less for only the walk (say 100 yen), I might come here semi-regularly just for the exercise in nature.
