Cinque Terre Walk and Drink

Reading up on this location can be daunting as where to start? We were very happy with our version, which was: Train to La Spezia. One you hop off you have to buy further tickets for the train that passes through the 5 villages. Once on the train, you put your ticket into the machine to validate it. We travelled to the last village, Monterosso - about 15 mins. This is a pretty village to look around. We walked from there to Vernazzo - this is a fairly demanding but beautiful walk. It takes nearly 2 hours, and affords views of the coastal strip and passes through lush vegetation. Fish and chips in Vernazzo was nice. We did not walk the next leg to Corniglia as we thought this might make our day hard work. We took the train to Corniglia - the station is quite a level below the small town and the town is not the most exciting of the 5 villages. We were going to walk to Manarola as this is a flat walk but the trail was closed for maintenance. From the Corniglia station the trail can be tricky as it drops down narrow stairs at the southern end of the station and you are not sure this is the correct trail. We used the train instead to return. You do not have to try and visit all towns or try and walk the whole trail. We had a wonderful day just walking the first leg

Borgo Storico di Manarola

Reviewed By faithandhope2live - Coquitlam, Canada

This is the most ancient village out of the five and was the last village that we visited on that day. We wanted to enjoy the sunset view from there, especially in November the sun set around 5 pm. We did not have any problem to find things to do till that time. First we planned to stroll the Path of love (Sentiero Dell's Amore) from Riomaggiore to Manarola. Because of reconstruction, only the first 650 feet was open from Manarola. Despite that there were still lots of tourists with the same idea as us. It is a scenic trail, so lots of photo opportunities. Before the sun set, the sunbeam shined on the colourful houses that were set on the cliff. It's just magnificent. That was a blessed day. We visited all 5 villages and experienced the strong wind in the morning, the warm sun in the afternoon and a magnificent sunset in the evening. Happy travelling!

This restaurant has amazing wines and the best focaccia I have ever tasted. The dish of the day was excellent too. It’s a lovely outside space but can get a tiny bit chilly late evening (I visited late September). Very reasonably priced (main dish served with focaccia plus a glass of excellent wine came to €20). This place is definitely worth a visit if you like wine and/or focaccia.

Chiesa di San Lorenzo

Reviewed By faithandhope2live - Coquitlam, Canada

From the train station we walked up the hill. Some parts are quite steep but short. At the top we saw an open court yard. There is and old stone church built in 1338. The interior of the church is simply decorated but serene and tranquil.  Across the church is the bell clock tower. Behind the tower is a beautiful view of part of Manarola. To the right is the vineyards layer by layer covering the hill. I saw the Nativity scene set up there with more than hundreds of figurines, like Mary, the baby Jesus, and Joseph, the shepherds, angels, stars, and various animals set up on the entire hill. I heard this Nativity scene will light up on December 8th. Unfortunately we were there 3 weeks early, but at least we had a glimpse of it. Happy Travelling!
