Walton's Mountain Museum

Reviewed By Paul W

Growing up in the 70's, my wife and I decided to stop and visit the museum on our way home from Washington, DC.

The area is quiet, peaceful, and still rural.

The museum and family home are within a few hundred yards from one another. Ike's store is just up the road a quarter of mile from the home.

The store burned down years ago but it gives a perspective of a very small community where children once played without the threat of being abducted or hurt.

We spent about two hours looking at the various exhibits of the show and the actual Hamner (Walton) family.

Those who we talked with agreed it was worth the time to visit this piece of Americana cultural history.

Crabtree Falls

Crabtree Falls is a beautiful spot to visit, especially on a cool Fall morning. It’s described as a hike, though I’d say it’s more like climbing stairs. And it’s kind of busy too, so don’t expect to feel like you’ve got the place to yourself. All in all, it’s well worth the 2 to 3 hours or so it’ll take to go all the way up and down.

Bold Rock Hard Cider

Located on the famed beverage corridor along Rt. 151 in Nelson County, the flagship Bold Rock Cider Barn opened in August 2014 and represents our company headquarters, center of operations and primary cider production facility. The ‘Chapel of Apple’ as it is affectionately known is a beautifully rustic timber framed barn overlooking the Rockfish River. Our staff will be happy to explain the process behind our award-winning craft hard cider and following a tasting, enjoy a pint, flight or delicious food from our Feed Room. The Nellysford Cider Barn is open daily at 11 AM.

The location is beautiful with great scenery. Small hike from the parking lot to the venue (complete with the 801 ft sign)! Free tasting of the two seasonal ciders. You can purchase 4 pack samplers and glasses of cider. I chose the sampler with the seasonal cider option. Would have rated this venue a 5 if the two staff members I encountered had not acted like being there was dreadful! Otherwise the visit was great and we even purchased cider to go in their shop!

Barrel House Brewery & Tasting Room

Reviewed By TYPSUKR - Arlington, Virginia

The second location of Blue Mountain Brewery seems to be mainly a large production facility for the brewery. You can get your draft beer by the tasting flight or pint. They also do growler fills and bottles can be purchased, both for offsite consumption. We were able to take a sneak peek into the barrel room where they are aging one of their beers in bourbon barrels. There was ample seating, including an additional "game lounge" up a flight of stairs. They also have a food truck on premises with an outdoor patio with an amazing view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We were on our way home to Ohio from a weekend away in Virginia. While out I had tried and really enjoyed the Vienna Lager. When I saw the sign on the highway saying the brewery was on the next exit I decided to stop. We got there right as they opened. We tried a sample of eight different beers. I was pleasantly surprised to find i liked most of them. I'm a firm believer that craft beer doesnt mean good beer. This was good beer. Although a couple were not for me.
We liked it so much we also purchased.some swag along with a couple six packs. This is where the disappointment came...after arivimg back home i found they gave me the wrong size T shirt.
Serioudly check it out and enjoy...just check the shirt size before you go.

My husband and I were just making up our long weekend getaway as we went...no plans. I like wineries that include sweet wine options and Hill Top came highly recommended from the Charlottesville Tourism Information Center (Carla & Jon). They were right! Beautiful setting on the farm next to the Blackberry Patch. We were lucky to be there on the day of the annual festival so there was live music by Dragonfly, one of the best bands we've heard!!!! Many great wine and mead selections, plus on this day, great artisans and food options. Top-notch sangria. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.

We had a 3 bedroom condo my wife and I and our 2 adult kids with their families. Although just a bit dated, overall a very nice place and very convenient. Fabulous, scenic and adventurous hiking trails with loops and trails of varying distances available. Indoor and outdoor pool are very nice, and we even went to the lake on afternoon. No shortage of things to do and great staff. We even did the zip line and plunge (summer tube ride). Just great fun.
