Ostia (/ˈɒstiə/) is a large neighbourhood in the X Municipio of the commune of Rome, Italy, near the ancient port of Rome, named Ostia, which is now a major archaeological site known as Ostia Antica. Ostia (also called Ostia Lido or Lido di Roma or Lido di Ostia) is also the only municipio or district of Rome on the Tyrrhenian Sea and many Romans spend the summer holidays there. With about 85,000 inhabitants, Ostia is the first or second-most populated frazione of Italy, depending on whether Mestre is counted.

The beach here is lovely but the whole place is tatty and needs a facelift. It looks as if the council does nothing. It's very popular at weekends and extremely difficult to get parking. The good side was the food in osteria de Toscannelli, so delicious that we visited twice

it seems that Time is frozen at the Borghetto dei Pescatori. from the time this little place in Ostia was built it seems that nothing has really changed. They instead continue to make innovations of the buildings but respecting the tradition of the year 1930. Incredible! one must see place

This is a great area for dining and shopping. There were lots of interesting shops.
Also nice for an afternoon break. We especially enjoyed it in the evening after dinner.
We found several cafes that were good for an after dinner beverage. One had a elevated Terrace which a good view if the street.

You have to have patience going here, since you have to take the train from Porta San Paolo/Ostiense without any information, and then take bus number 7, which stops right outside the station Cristoforo Colombo. Then, after a lot of stops, you should step off at Varco 3 or 4 to reach the nude beach. The sand is marvellous, the water warm and the beach is not too crowded. You will find a couple of small bars where you can have something simple to eat or drink. I had a marvellous day there!

Ciao a tutti!!!!!!!

Went there just one time, never returned. Lots of rocks in the sea part, rude and negligent staff. We looked for another beach, and stayed elsewhere the rest of our vacation. Do not recommend. You can find better Beaches for the same money in Ostia.

We had a challenge". Flying in from the US with 2 teens, a 10 year old, and four adults. Arriving at 7.30 AM. But we couldn't check into our vacation rental apartment until 3 pm. What do we do with jet lagged kids and adults? The answer: GO to the beach.
Now the fun began. Needed a place to lock and store luggage. And a way to get back to town. It's hard for an American to learn about the private Beaches of Ostia di Lido. Everything is in Italian and it seems to be a spit the locals love. After all, it is the beach closest to Rome.
We found il Gabbianno via google. And Roberto wrote me back quickly and in English! That may not sound like much, but I sent out 6 emails to different beach clubs and he was the only one to reply..
Roberto welcomed us to his family friendly establishment and made us a reservation for just what we needed.
Once our plane landed, we were able to take a taxi over for a very reasonable fare. We were early at 8.30 AM and were met by an elderly man at the "ticket" booth. He apologized for not speaking English but we made ourselves understood. Massimo, took us around to the private cabins for our luggage and the showers. He set up our sun beds and umbrellas. The snack bar had pastries and cappuccino. Then we played in the sand and relaxed.
Roberto arrived and gave us a tour and settled our bill easily with a credit card. We asked him to arrange a taxi back to the train station. It was too far to walk or bus with our luggage. Instead, he arranged a special favor for Massimo to drive us in two groups when we were ready. That was special and we appreciated it.
Thanks Roberto for taking good care of this American family.
