10 Things to do in Kumamoto That You Shouldn't Miss

July 3, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Proud Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the most important of its kind. Visitors will be awed as they explore its stone curves, array of turrets, and displays of armor, weapons, and maps. Suizenji Jojuen Garden is downright cinematic, a playground of slopes and dips and trees, in a million shades of green. Cherry blossom season is a lovely time to visit.

Kumamoto Castle

We spent an afternoon with an English guide from the Kumamoto SGG Club—-Mieko Okada who was our personal guide at the Kumamoto Castle & to the Suizenji Jojuen Gardens. If you go to Kumamoto these two sights should be at the top of your list of things to see & places to go. Hopefully in the next few months more of the reconstruction will allow for an actual tour of the castle, but the grounds, walls, and views were amazing none the less.

We took the ferry on Thur morning at 11:10. However, due to fog, it was cancelled. We had to wait for the next ferry at 1pm. We never knew that there is so much fog at the Ferry pier until we see it for ourselves. Nevertheless, it was no fault of the ferry operators as the weather here is unpredictable. Just be careful when you plan your trip and always have contingency plans. As for us, we waited for the next one at 1pm, and the fog cleared by then, and off we went...Ferry trip was enjoyable and very relaxing too. Highly recommended.

I only have trouble in Tokyo changing trains, for there are just too many tracks. This like the rest of the country is well organized with a fine staff that gets you to the gate you're looking for.
