I ended up hiking in Austria on my 35th birthday. It was challenging, but worth the experience. Beautiful place.

TO GIVE SOMEONE THE MOST SPECIAL GIFT THAT TYROL HAS TO OFFER, THERE IS ONLY ONE SOURCE: THE RIEDEL FACTORY IN KUFSTEIN! From such a short distance off the highway, a traveler and wine connoisseur can truly experience the unique world of wine glass production at the Riedel factory. The glass factory allows an inside look at the glass making process and how the glassware is diligently mouth blown and hand made. To experience the different senses, Riedel offers “Sinnfonie”, an adventure of sensual perception. Visitors also have the opportunity to buy the world’s famous grape varietal specific stemware and prestigious decanters directly from Riedel at the onsite 300 qm shop. Every customer will get their own individual consultation where our experts will highlight the Riedel glass philosophy and answer the important question of, ”Which is the right glass for my wine?” Seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting. Come and see how our glassmakers create a SINNFONIE from the versatile material of glass. There has been no change in the composition of glass for over 4000 years. It still contains the naturally occurring basic materials of quartz, lime and alkalis which are heated up to a temperature of 1000 degree celsius to make them liquid and malleable. “Only” 2000 years have passed since the glass blowpipe was used in ancient Rome for the first time. This made it possible to blow glass into different shapes. At our factory in Kufstein our glassblowers still use this ancient mouth-blowing method with great care and precision to create the world-famous handcrafted Riedel glasses. Claus J. Riedel was the first person in the long history of the glass to design its shape according to the character of the wine. He is thus the inventor of the functional wineglass. A positive approach to life is linked to pleasure and enjoyment. Enjoyment is conveyed by our senses, and this is the theme of our multimedia show entitled SINNFONIE.Why not share our enjoyment in our SINNFONIE? Let‘s set off together on a journey through the world of glass and the senses. We are looking forward to your visit. Welcome to Riedel!

Kufstein is a beautiful Austrian Tyrolean town on the river Inn (of Innsbruk fame) that just happens to be dominated by a massive castle. This is built on a sheer rock outcrop and over the years has expanded to cover the entire upper surface of the rock. The castle bounced between the control of Bavaria and the Habsburgs for 500 years with Maximillian I creating the famous round tower that is a symbol of the castle. After its military purpose ended it became a political prison for those deemed too liberal by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Which was just about anyone who lifted their forehead off the ground. It is now a tourist attraction and museum. We parked in the town centre and then promptly lost sight of the aforementioned castle that dominates the town and got lost. I crossed the river to get my bearings, such as they are and then we headed in a vaguely correct direction until we found the castle entrance. We paid our €25 entrance and took the funicular to the upper courtyard and keep complex. The castle is well signposted for each of the museums and they generally have a decent amount of English explanations, although some were lacking. Before the funicular there was a man powered treadmill to get goods from the ground to the upper levels of the castle! This is still in place along with a wooden gallery overlooking the courtyard. The next courtyard has the castle cafe where we paused for a coffee before continuing our tour. The castle includes museums of local history, costumes and culture, arms and armour (including replicas you can try on), a history of Maximillian I and the castle and the political prison. There are also gun batteries, a herb garden, the worlds largest open air organ (that we didn't visit) and a rock cut tunnel that extended for a couple of hundred metres linking two parts of the castle. Although I'm sure you're thinking this was just another castle it was that but also a superb set of museums and a tour through 500 years of Tyrolean history. The views were pretty good too. We left the castle after about three hours and wandered around the town before making our way home.

This is a must visit when in Kufstein. We had checked into the hotel and were given two feathers to exchange for a complimentary gin and tonic at Stollen. What a fascinating and surprising place - just wonderful. Once our eyes had accustomed to the darker surroundings, it was simply fantastic. The complimentary gin and tonic was so good, we had to have another! There are over 1000 gins on offer here and the cave like surroundings with lots of candles, lamps and very comfy chairs are unique. Can highly recommend!
