We were not sure whether in December it would be worthwhile to come to this garden. Were we pleasantly surprised! There was a museum which was informative. There was a view to Kochi. There were even beautiful autumn leaves in December. But the most stunning part was the green house. It was huge and contained many exotic flowers. I read from some review saying that it was a small garden. Really? The whole botanical garden was huge. We spent 3 hours "rushing" through it. This is a great place to be close to nature.

We came to Kochi to visit the castle. We walked through the market to get back to the station. Lots of veggies, and plants for sale. Also many booths selling knives, swords and other cutlery. There were a few antique dealers as well.
A bit of local colour and charm, but nothing to knock your socks off.
Worth a visit if you are in Kochi on a Sunday.

Constructed in the 1600s, this castle was originally named Otakasaka after the hill on which it resides. Built to defend the city below, the structure was partially damaged by a fire in the early 1700s but never faced a formal attack.
An original castle that has not been changed to make it a 'better' tourist attraction. No shoes are allowed inside to preserve the polished (with age - not wax) floors and tatami mats. The original steep, high step staircases are all open to the public and the view from the top lacquered balcony was stunning even on a grey October morning. Staff were extremely helpful.
If you buy a one day tram pass you get discounted entry to the castle - we did this the wrong way round!

The opening of the streetcar of TOSADEN TRAFFIC is MAY2,1904. By four small streetcar of 27 capacity,a driver of the gold button- style boarded it and appeared in the town of Kochi breezily. In the open streetcar,We have the oldest history now in Japan. Please enjoy the trip by the streetcar.
The trams are small but they run very frequently, so it's very convenient. If you have the time, it's fun to just go where the tram goes and get off at the end and see what most people seldom see on a trip. The fare...MoreWe sincerely thank you for using our trams. We're very happy to be told that by you. Thank you very much for introduction of the one day tram pass.

We reached here by bus from Kochi Station in the afternoon of a Thursday during a cruise stop here in Kochi. It was about a 45 minute drive. We walked about 5 minutes to the beach, which didn't allow swimming at this time (not sure why). The beach was nice with its road formations, sea breeze & blue waters. But it wasn't as nice as the other beach I visited during my cruise, Haeundae Beach in Busan. The shore wasn't traditional sand, but rather tiny pebbles and stones. There is also an aquarium with an admission fee with sea lions. We also bought ice cream here, which was good, but nowhere near the quality of the ice cream at the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, whose ice cream was amazing! We had a nice stroll along he walkway across the length of the beach. We were also able to see our cruise ship in the distance from the beach.

Tosa Terrace not only has sightseeing pamphlets - it also has a business center and provides accommodation information. The building is also a good venue to relax as there are cedar, hinokia cypress, and Tosa shikui plants inside.
We needed a map and advice on the trams. We got everything we needed from the helpful clerk.
It was a Sunday and we were here for the market and to visit the castle. We were pleased that the TIC was open on a Sunday and was able to provide us with a reasonable map.

The museum is dedicated to the memory of Sakamoto Ryoma however, it appears to be designed basically for Japanese speakers (and readers) as little information is provided in English.
There is a reconstruction of the room where Ryoma and his companion where assassinated complete with replicas of the blood stained scroll and byoubu originally in that room. Found that a bit macabre.

I have seen so many places like this in Japan where there's a park that overlooks the city, they are all great and worth while visiting and this is no exception. The views of Kochi are spectacular, Godaisan Park is the type of place I could easily stay for a couple of hours staring at the views, I know I took a lot of pictures but I took time to savour the moment. Really neat place to visit.

This statue is perhaps interesting for Japanese people who idolize Ryoma. If you are familiar with the history and find Ryoma as fascinating as the Japanese, then it might be interesting. funny thing is that locals consider this statue very very big...its not that big...but its interesting to see the Japanese' reactions to it
