The Katori shrine, or Katori Jingu as it is known is an ancient shrine of the Shinto order said to have been started over two and a half thousand years ago. The Honten and other structures have been rebuilt many times over the centuries. The current structures were built around 1700 AD.
I went to Katori in February. I took a train from Narita to Sawara. After looking around in Sawara, and lunch there I asked how to get to Katori Jingu. A tourist office (no one spoke English) pointed and gestured for me to take a taxi from Sawara station.
Once there, the first thing you see is a wooden gateway with a forested area behind. Through the gateway is a path through the woods, sloping upwards with carved stone pillars on both sides. Inside there's a set of steps leading to the main temple.
The temple is a black wood structure and is beautiful.
Getting back was a problem. There was no taxi and no one around spoke English. I got to the nearby Katori station but there was no one there and no ticket machine or counter.
After waiting half an hour and seeing no one around, I saw a sign on the railway platform pointing in the direction of Sawara town. I walked for an hour till I got to Sawara station.
I was told later that I could have boarded a train at Katori and bought the ticket on arrival at Narita (information not confirmed)
I also found out later there are local busses from Sawara station passing the shrine, both ways.

Sawara Town makes me feel like I walk in the 18 century. There are many old shops and houses made of wood and preserved well. Many of them show off their own antique in the shop as voluntary museums. I had a delicious Japanese lunch and found another nice French and Italian restaurants and cafes there. My friend bought a bottle of nice Sake at a brewery. There are many willow trees along the Ono River. Its atomosphere attracted me. It takes 30 minutes from Narita Station by train. I hope more foreigners to visit and enjoy Japan there.

You can go on a sight seeing boat ride from here. If you prefer jet ski, you can rent here.
There is a market of fresh produce from the area. I bought a box of hen eggs, named "Maiden Eggs". These were laid by very young hen so eggs are small but has very good looking yoke
inside.
My daughter bought a pair of beetles for 700 yen, a very good bargain/

Sawara is a pleasant little village, 30 min a way from Narita with the local train.
The village itself, with the Edo houses in the old quarter is well worth the trip!!
The memorial is at the backyard of Ino Tadataka´s house and the house itself gives little more than an impression of the houses of the Edo period.
The museum, however, which is nearby is very interesting. It explains how Mr Tadataka surveyed Japan and made the set of maps official for a couple of hundred years.
The museum is modern and pleasant with some of the posters in English. At the reception you can also get an English guide.
It is a museum explaining very well the methods used by the cartographer, and explaining the magnitude of the task.

I really recommend this place for foreign traveler. It is traditional Japanese architecture as home for rich citizen, built in 18th century. Ino Tadataka who made the quite detail map of Japan in early 19th Century, built it and lived there.
Free to enter, you can feel the atmosphere of Edo period! Worth visit.
