Most people access this gorgeous valley from the Trans Canada Highway via Highway 40, just east of Bow Valley Provincial Park. At that turn-off is a casino resort and gas station there with a Tim Horton's. Most of the attractions in the valley only have pit toilets, so for the squeamish, a stop here might be critical. Highway 40 follows the Kananaskis River (a popular white water rafting and kayaking river) to Barrier Lake, where there's a terrific Info Centre. If you've not been up this way, do stop here and let the experts guide you further, based on what you're keen on experiencing. There are tons of activities, campgrounds, hiking trails, view points, golfing, picnic areas, and it bit of shopping and posh accommodation in Kananaskis Village. If Banff seems a bit pricey to you, this is your valley, as it's hard to spend money here (except at the Village and golf course). There is a nice gas station with flush toilets / ice cream store / grocery store down the valley at Fortress Junction, nothing pricey here. The Peter Lougheed Info Centre is worth a stop in itself, with a nice museum, and a place for indoor picnicking if the weather isn't great. They also have experts there to advise on what to do in the park.

I walked a portion of this trail (about 2 km) on September 27, 2020. I enjoyed discovering this pretty little trail through town and it was such a gem! The trail led along a section of wooden boardwalks through an open grassy area and along the creek on a gravel path through the woods. There were lots of amazing views along the way. It was a very peaceful trail, flat and easy, and a nice place to go for a relaxing walk.

There are some challenges with a short, steeper section, but almost everybody should be able to manage this fantastic hike. On our recent visit, there was a group of seniors, 70+, as well as mom's group with their newborns, so we really mean it is for everyone. The trail follows the Upper Kananaskis Lakeshore Trail for a short while, and the views from this leg are quite something. The uphill section through the forest gives you wonderful mossy woods. At the lake, the view across the water when you arrive is classic, but don't stop there. In the summer, it's safe to negotiate left, to find your own little spot on the lake. For those with time and lots of gas in the tank, outside of the snow season, you can proceed on very strenuous informal route to the ridge to the north, which has a stunning view down valley from the top. Up the to lake is safe all year, but when the snow has come, the cirque around the lake is a big avalanche threat, so DO NOT venture beyond the stream outflow area where the trail first meets the lake.

What a beautiful place to spend your day with family. We always enjoyed being outdoors with scenic attractions --- mountains, fresh air, woods, lake, trees, rocks and some friendly animals, it feels great that Upper Kananaskis offered all of these! Very relaxing and peaceful, you can actually feel being reconnected with nature. My kids (Ages 5-11) were able to play by the lake and throw rocks. We did some hiking and explore. Picnic tables are available as first come first serve. What I like most is we had privacy and distance with other people, we also put up our tent in case it rains or to take a nap and yes it was very useful! Toilet room is available too, just bring your own sanitizer, toilet paper, gloves, disposable seat cover, and mask! Overall experience was great and I highly recommend it for people of all ages! Things to do: Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, (Bring your own) What to wear: Layers/ raincoat/ summer attire (weather changes unpredictably) Shoes: running shoes slip resistant (lake sides are more on rocks) Foods/ drinks: Bring your own Parking space: adequate ~ The earlier the better * Don't forget your camera *

Went early on a Friday morning to avoid the traffic. The trail starts off quite wide but narrows as you approach the lower falls. The lower falls are now fenced off due to some rock falls, however still looks amazing. We then climbed the trail to the upper falls and to be honest found this to be better than the lower falls. Numerous cascades along the climb to the top and so many areas to just stop and sit and listen to the water rushing by. Not an arduous trail by any stretch, round trip including the upper falls is about 4KM and really enjoyable.

This glacial fed lake is a wonderful spot to use a kayak/canoe/SUP that you bring or rent onsite. It is also a beautiful spot to picnic with a family, go on hikes but no swimming the water is too chilly. Go early in the busy seasons as it can get really full by early afternoon especially on the weekends.
