A great reserve. Essential for the yellow eared parrot and equally so for all wildlife. Great birding destination.

Stopped for a coffee and snack in one of the many eateries on our birding tour of Colombia. Lovely place.

Nowhere in the world will you be able to witness this kind of experience so close to your hotel. It takes only 5 to 10 minutes walking from the center of town. Usually these exotic birds can be found deep in the andean cloud forest but for some reason they love Jardin. Recently, the area is open for visitors from 3pm until dark. It is a private farm and you need to ring the bell to be let in. The owner is very friendly and if you have connections you could probably visit in the morning. If you are into birding look for the green jay which is another beautiful bird that is easily seen here. We have it in Texas but the south american variation sports a crest.

As with every small town or pueblo, the church is the centerpiece of the town. In this case, it is the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception with its dark brick façade towering over the plaza and over the people sitting on the square or in the surrounding coffee houses. This is a traditional Colombians Catholic basilica, built in 1918-1940 in a neo-gothic design and built entirely from hand carved stones quarried in the foothills of Jardin. Father San Juan Nepomuceno Barrera, who started it, allegedly asked that sinners bring stones from the nearby quarry equal in weight to the weight of their sins for its construction. The inside felt airy and sunny as the rays of the sun peering in through the windows. The arches inside are covered in gold which added to the brightness. Unlike most churches, this one does not have a rib vault. And like any good church, there were church bells which rang every hour, in fact, every fifteen minutes, starting at 5:00am and going late into the night. This is a Catholic town and everyone needs to be called to mass.

We went with a tour company...Jeep up from Jardin takes about 30 minutes, then another 30 minutes walk to the house...we were served hot canela and yummy patacones with salsa and corn fritters...then started the trek down to the waterfall...not for the leary or non-sure-footed....slippery, rocky...but worth it. Waterfall in the cave stunning! Can swim, cool water, picturesque...fab. Best NOT on weekend! Hiked back up along the creek side with several small waterfalls, butterflies, and birds! Back to the house ( this is on private property), for some mora juice and buneulo! Walk back to Jeep and another steep drive back to the villlage. All this for $55,000...which included the $20,000 entrance fee and a guide who explained things well. Seriously lovely trip!

I highly recommend checking out la Garrucha when visiting Jardin, Colombia. The price to go and return is super cheap, and the views of the city, mountains and valley below are incredible! Even more, you can eat some really great food at the top while enjoying the view, and the owner of the place is so kind and welcoming!
