This is a gem of a place off the beaten track but really surprisingly easy to access by car. It's a huge temple complex and grounds with a small creek running through it. There are several thousand trees many of them cherry blossoms so it would look spectacular in spring. Right now I am looking forward to seeing the leaves changing next month (November I would guess would be a good time). The temple buildings and Gardens are immaculate.
It has a large free car park. Toilets. Possibly a souvenir shop though it was closed on Saturday. Right now they are doing some renovations so some areas were closed. Still it was peaceful to stroll around the tree-lined paths. A few people had bento lunches on the park benches.
It's free to walk around. If you want to get closer to the temple there is a nominal fee of perhaps about 500 yen.

If you are a cat-lover, you need to visit this station. It was Tama the first when I was there in Feb 2015. Unfortunately I missed the duty hours so I saw her sleeping in her cozy place. A few months later she died. I was happy that I could get a chance to see her before she died. Now it is Tama the second on duty. She attracts many visitors each year so be prepared that this station will be full of people.

We stumbled upon this huge temple complex in August. It was almost deserted being so hot and a weekday. But we were able to wander around freely and explore to our hearts content. What struck me most was how carefully preserved all the buildings and Gardens are, how big the whole place is and that people appear to live inside. It was very cool and I plan to return.
We parked about 500m down the road. It cost 500 yen by way of a donation left in the honesty box. I recommend driving since it's quite far off the beaten track. the roads are narrow as you approach but people are courteous.
The cafe / restaurant at the entrance is very basic and I don't think many tourists go there (from abroad) so Japanese maybe helpful, but they were friendly and talkative.
I'm not sure where the train is but I think it's walkable from the station.
