Magnolia Scents by Design is the world's best smelling scent shop, artisanally handcrafting natural candles and soaps! Our downtown destination store is also a micro-factory, staffed with expert chandlers (candle/soap makers) creating some of the most delectably aromatic home fragrance and body products you've ever had the pleasure to sniff. The secret to superb scents is in the ingredients. Magnolia Scents uses only the best, most natural ingredients in our products; including soy wax, essential oils, and a long list of plant based oils and butters. Not only does this give healthy and clean benefits for your home and body, but it's good for the planet too! The company started as a home-based business in 2006 with $50 in candle making supplies and a dream. Magnolia Scents by Design is Independence's first destination artisanal candle/soap micro-factory and workshop space that must be sniffed to be believed!

A must-see for anyone who reAd the books or saw the TV series, this is a well-thought-out display around a replica of the original one room cabin and four room house on the original location. Also included are a typical schoolhouse and the tiny local post office. Make sure you take time to look carefully through the gift shop. There are a number of things you won’t find elsewhere, like pencils made of branches, photos of old west figures like Calamity Jane and old west and Native American cookbooks. A definite must-see.

I grew up in Independence and have been a fan of Elk City State Park for many, many years. The name "Elk City" eludes me as the dam is just a few short miles from Independence. The Elk River dam on the Elk River has been a god send to thousands of people below the dam from preventing the flooding of their homes, property, and the destruction of fields and crops. That was the intent of building the reservoir. The by product of the dam is obviously a great opportunity of providing recreational opportunities. Elk City State Park is an excellent, and under utilized, playground for families and friends. The lake is beautiful and quite large. Boaters have miles of unimpeded stretches of throwing the accelerator wide open and "running down the lake" without much traffic. It's a great lake for skiers...and yes, fisherman. The lake has many cats, bass, crappie, bluegills, perch, and yes, even some walleye. The camping and RV areas are very well taken care of. The hiking around the area is incredible...from easy...to hard...to, "is this really Kansas!" The dam is is a structure between two very large hills. The hill on the the East side of the dam is called "Table Mound." Table Mound is a unique and very large limestone "hill." The terrain of Table Mound is very rugged. There are many trails on and around Table Mound. On the East side of Table Mound there is the haunted community of Le Hunt. Le Hunt was a small "Company Town" that was the home of a cement plant. The town Marshal was, the silent movie star, Tom Mix. Now overgrown by bushes and trees the cement plant and the community of Le Hunt are very worthy of exploring...you might even see a ghost or three (one being the dog of Tom Mix!). Do yourself a favor and discover a lake and and an area totally worthy and basically...undiscovered...Elk City State Park...just about three miles West of Independence...

Founded in 1919 in Independence, Kansas, Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) was created to deter children from mischievous Halloween antics and provide a positive outlet for Fall fun. Nearly 100 years later, this October festival is now the largest annual celebration in the state of Kansas. All of the traditional carnival bases are covered with fun rides, cook-offs, parades, live music, and fried food galore. The Queen Neewollah pageant and Great Pumpkin contests are must-sees and provide an authentic glimpse back at old timey Americana.
