During World War II 563 Destroyer Escorts battled Nazi U-Boats on the North Atlantic protecting convoys of men and supplies. In the Pacific, they stood first in line to defend naval task forces from Kamikaze attacks. Today only one remains afloat in America. Step back in time. Return to 1945 aboard USS SLATER. See how Sailors worked, hear the sounds of a living ship, touch a piece of American history, and walk the decks where hundreds of Sailors have walked before.
Having visited most of the WWII museum ships on the east coast (and some on the west), I can say that the USS Slater beat them all in terms of a restoration that made you feel as though you were on the ship when it was in service. My nine-year-old son, who only had a passing interest in WWII, loved the tour, which included tour guide (Austin) demonstrations as to how to get into a top bunk, direct an anti-aircraft gun, and use a signal light. My son particularly liked seeing and holding munitions that were near some of the armament on board because it gave him a greater appreciation for the effort that gun crews needed to expend when defending the ship. The guide answered my son’s many questions that ranged from medical care, living conditions, and general quarters patiently and clearly. My son has already made me promise to take him to see the U.S.S. Massachusetts at Falls River the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York.

Lyndhurst mansion is closed but the grounds are open! Daily Grounds Passes are available through December 20th. Overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, is Lyndhurst, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. Designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, its architectural brilliance is complemented by the park-like landscape of the estate and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts. Its noteworthy occupants included: former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt, and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. Lyndhurst is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Lyndhurst was a dream estate built by Mr. Pauling that was sold to Jay Gould that overlooked the Hudson River. During Halloween, the house was decorated with Halloween decorations that took away from the overall historic feel of the house but was entertaining. I took the tour of the house it lasted about an hour and a half and get a good look at the furniture that was in the house during Jay Gould’s life. The house itself wasn’t anything extremely impressive. The most memorial piece of information about the estate for me was that the TV series, Dark Shadows, was filmed at Lyndhurst, and Barnabas’ and Angelique’s paintings from the TV series were displayed in one of the rooms. The house was built in a gothic revival style where ever door, window, room, furniture and et cetera had a parallel matching accompaniment. It was a enjoyable historic site to explore.

The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Over the years meticulous restoration has been done to maintain and protect the Capitol for future generations of New Yorkers.
Recently, I visited for the third time the NY State Capitol and it is just a wonderful place that can be revisited every few years. Also, I have visited the Nation's Capitol as well as several State Capitols and I can attest that this one is even more impressive than our Nation's Capitol. The free, one-hour guided tour is highly informative and, depending on the tour guide, you can get different historical information and information relating to the decorative elements of this unusual, tasteful and ornate Capitol. My recommendation is to make reservations if you visit during the weekends, but you may be able to get on a tour if there are "no show" reservations. Regarding Albany, it is simply a shame that there is no plan to rescue entire neighborhoods built after the Civil War to accommodate the number of craftsmen that moved into the area to build the Capitol. There is exquisite residential architecture that is just simply wasted!

At our 10-acre National Historic Landmark District, visitors experience over 300 years of history across seven historic stone-house museums, a reconstructed 1717 French Church, the Huguenot community’s original burying ground, and a replica Esopus Munsee wigwam. Period rooms and exhibits tell the stories of a French Huguenot settlement as it evolved over time, and also reveal the history of the area’s Native and enslaved African peoples and Dutch settlers.Historic Huguenot Street has grown into an innovative museum, chartered as an educational corporation by the University of the State of New York, that is dedicated to protecting our historic buildings, conserving an important collection of artifacts and manuscripts, and promoting the stories of the Huguenot Street families, from the sixteenth century to today.
1700 stone houses, graveyard, small museum, magnificent grounds and trees. Tours available, as well as picnic tables. My dog likes it too

Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is a 19th century railroad bridge transformed into the world's longest elevated pedestrian park.
It is so nice to walk over the bridge! People go solo, for a romantic date, or with families of all ages! Beautiful views and make sure to take a ride on the glass elevator. ???? Also, have you kids use the toilets before you get on the actual bride. ????there are some porta-potties before you get on.

Enjoyed this half day excursion from Beacon to Bannerman Island. Gorgeous views, recommend doing this trip in the fall, short hike up (has stairs and railings) and appreciated hearing the interesting history though this was a self-guided tour. What vision the Bannerman had! Restoration will be fun to watch now that I know about this gem. Stroll Beacon’s art galleries, loved @beachglass and restaurants (though not gluten free friendly) after the Bannerman Island visit. Covid precautions present everywhere.

This was an excellent tour. It was overwhelming to be in the middle of the Hudson River, birds soaring overhead, people from all walks of life, ... being where Henry Hudson sailed, seeing West Point! We loved it!!! The crew were super nice and friendly - we have taken plenty of cruise tours where the crew just goes "thru the motions" while it is clear they can't wait for you to GET OFF...not these people. They were lovely to everyone, caring and all of them acted as if this were the most interesting thing they could be doing! If you are a visitor to the area (we were) you should absolutely do it! Long enough to stay interesting and short enough to stay interesting! Color books for the kids and plenty to keep them interested though there were only a few kids on board when we were there! There were several couples from the area who have done it before and were doing it again...so if you live in the area - you should go! It was cool inside; they sell beer and wine which were quite nice as well as letting you bring snacks and drinks (no alcohol) aboard with you - no coolers. They had hot dogs for sale and candy. You can sit on the front but the back on the left side of the cabin with cabin facing forward was great!!!! Free parking across the street and in one lot on their side - but across the street had shade trees. Beautiful park with lots of very, very, friendly geese. Great restaurant next door. This was terrific! Highly recommend!

Generally considered as the best one along Hudson valley because it is challenging and has amazing views, Breakneck ridge trail is always super crowded in summer, especially on weekends. In contrast, it was so quiet in winter that one could have all the beautiful views just to self. Even before the forcasted Nor'easter snow storm coming in, high mountains were already covered by snow. The gentle sunlight in winter further made everything look so peaceful and graceful. On top of the lookout tower on south beacon mountain, it was the true 360-degree panoramic view of extended ranges and Hudson river. Overall, it was indeed a wonderful hiking experience. Of course, hiking a steep trail during winter is more demanding than in Summer, so it is really for those prepared and capable.
