Zip lining through the banana trees created beautiful and pleasant views. Zip lining in front of the waterfall was exhilarating and certainly created a spectacular view. We also had pretty views of the Pacific Ocean and lots of greenery. We had plenty of time to take beautiful pictures of the scenery. The guides, Eric and Chris, provided good information about the island and were funny and supportive. I would definitely do this tour again!

We visited Hawi while on a trip to the Big Island for our anniversary. We decided to take advantage of Flumin Kohala as it sounded like great fun, and something totally different than we had ever done. You ride in kayaks through a series of irrigation ditches from the old sugar plantations, as well as through 11 different hand dug caves. The longest cave was 1800 feet long! These were dug by the Japanese years ago. Vernon & Jericho were our guides and they were great! They were both native to the area, and had a wealth of knowledge of Hawaiian history. This adventure is appropriate for anyone that can sit in a kayak for approximately 1 1/2 hrs. It is a very low key ride as you are not in open water at any time. The van ride to the start of the ride is pretty bumpy as you are going across country to get there. But the scenery is amazing! And the history lesson is priceless! All of the employees were extremely courteous and helpful. The employees put a lot of work into keeping this adventure going. They are responsible for maintaining the ditches and flumes, as well as cutting back foliage and trees, all repairs to the course and equipment. But, they truly love what they do and it shows! You will get wet on this ride as you are riding through caves. However, if you bring towels and a change of clothes, there is a changing room for when you are done. Do not let the water deter you. It is a very leisurely ride and all from the very young to the not so young will enjoy this trip! There is hot chocolate and tea available for you when you return to the headquarters. Hawi is also a very quaint Hawaiian town that you need to explore. It's lovely! The only problem is if someone is extremely claustrophobic, some of the caves are pretty tight and all are dark, but the guides have flashlights on their heads to light the way, and you are constantly moving through the caves. Don't miss this adventure!

Kohala Mountain Road

Reviewed By NormanSantaFe - Santa Fe, NM

We stay a couple of weeks a year in Hawi, Hawaii, at the northern tip of the Big Island. While there are numerous shops, restaurants, and grocery outlets in Hawi, the town of Waimea is where most regional shopping is located. There are 2 ways to get to Waimea from Hawi - down the coast and then up the hill, Waimea being at about 2,500', or over Kohala Mountain via the Kohala Mountain Road. The time is about the same either way and both offer scenic views. However, the KMR is best during good weather because you climb to 3,500+ feet with gorgeous countryside, ocean and volcano views, and then fall down to Waimea with Mouna Kea looming some 13,000' above the town in the distance. Definitely worth the drive, though not in bad weather or at night if you are not familiar with the Road (because it is narrow, there are lots of sharp curves, and the shoulders are not well-marked or very adequate).

Kohala Grown Farm Tours offers an excellent introduction to Hawaii's exotic fruits. Nate is a farmer and a knowledgeable guide whose passion for sustainable grown local food shines throughout the tour. We tasted chocolate, fresh from the pod and made into bars, as well as oranges, ice cream beans, papayas, rolenia, two types of rare bananas, lilikoi, star apple, finger lime and coconut. Afterwards we shopped for Kohala grown products at the Kohala Grown Market, owned by Nate's partner, Leo. Lunch was at a fabulous locally sourced restaurant called Sushi Rock. I highly recommend this tour!!

There are some seriously beautiful pieces of art in this gallery. Photographs, carvings, art glass, jewelry, etc.; quite likely something will be pleasing (and a temptation).
Even if one doesn't purchase an item, it is still uplifting just to browse the creativity collected here.
And, once one has nourished the soul, consider the adjacent Kings View Cafe for nourishing the stomach. Good food at reasonable prices.

Loved visiting this shop every time that I have come to Hawi. This time I left with two lovely pieces of jewelry for myself. Other times Christmas gift recipients have been the lucky winners.Very special things that are not seen everywhere and that have a wide range of prices. Highly recommend a visit.
