Colorado Model Railroad Museum

Reviewed By Ronald D - Stillwater, Oklahoma

A year or two ago I'd picked up a brochure on this museum and decided I wanted to see it on my next trip to Colorado. I went yesterday, 9/16/17, driving up from the Denver area.

It was well worth the drive.

Some 5,500 square feet, it features the best of model railroading. The layout is fantastic: huge mountains, rivers, bridges, towering trestles, neat little communities, cities, and industrial areas. The modelling work is simply first rate, and I believe it's all done by amateur volunteers ... but the work is more than professional quality.

There are trains constantly running, by members of the museum, who are super friendly and willing to answer any and all questions. And the trains travel through the entire layout. There was one with orange chemical cars that looked to be nearly 200 cars long with several engines pulling it, through huge curves and up and down mountains. And that was just one of, oh, probably 8 or 9 trains being run on the tracks at the same time.

The main level is 48-inches off the floor (but there are platforms and stools to stand on for shorter folks and kids) and the tops of the mountains are about 98-inches high. And you walk on the main level and upper level to get great views of the entire layout.

And the entire layout is super-detailed ... with small touches most don't see, but which add greatly to the realism and enjoyment of the layout.

There is a small gift shop with some toys and trinkets for sale, as well as some videos.

And there is a fully restored caboose which you can walk through to see how the conductors lived and worked.

Admission is $10 with discounts for seniors and children.

We went through fairly quickly, in just over an hour, but you could easily spend days here and see something different, and wonderful, on every visit.

I will be back!

In have enjoyed walking this trail many times. It follows around the Poudre River and the plants and the water are extremely interesting . One of the plants smells like popcorn. Very cool. I included a picture of snapping turtles on a log in the Poudre river. If you are an exercise nut or just enjoy scenery this is the place to be. If you are walking like me watch out for bikers.

We wanted to visit this Museum but when we got there, it was not open. We were looking foreword to the living history demonstrations may include printing at the High Plains Post historic print shop, blacksmithing at the forge, rope-making, chuck-wagon-style cooking, scrub board laundry techniques, corn shucking and grinding, food preparation on cast iron stoves. Maybe next time. Check times that it is open before you go.

I bring my daughter to this indoor pool to go swimming once and awhile. They have a great toddler play area with a slide and zero entry pool. There is a waterfall and a climb area for them. There is a lazy river and a couple slides. One of the slides always seems to be closed when we go, I'm not even sure why it's there. There is a big pool to do laps and a smaller pool for the medium sized kids. The water is a little chilly but the kids dont mind. Overall this is a great pool to bring the kids to for a few hours.

It seems like people either get the prairies or they don't. Some find the wide-open spaces inspiring and some find them boring, or even intimidating.
I love the prairies of eastern Colorado and this area is no exception. The vast views, bird calls carrying for miles, the wind rustling the grasses - all good with me. The sky at night out there, so far from city lights, is simply amazing.
As a crew member of an archaeological survey of Pawnee I can tell you that it's been the scene of activity extending back hundreds and even thousands of years.

I bought beer for my friend and when I could not carry it all, the employee told me to make two trips! No offer of assistance even though there were multiple servers and not many patrons. This was my first and last visit.

They offer a great selection of books but they also offer many other things like activities for children, audio books, movies, comfortable seating areas to sit and read or meet, a snack room with vending machines and tables, computers and printers to use while at the library and much more. My son enjoys visiting and would happily while away the day there.

Glenmere Park is in a beautiful section of Greeley, created 100 years ago to provide recreational spaces for the locals. It still fulfills that function. It has an attractive lake with ducks and geese and a lovely gazebo. It hosts lots of local events and even has a fishing pond for kids.
