Great Circle Earthworks

Spanning almost a quarter of a mile, this round earthworks was an amazing construction feat 2,000 years ago.

The Great Circle and the Works museum are one of the few indicators left from what historians believe are the first civilization from the US - the Missippians, Hopewells, or collectively the Mound Builders. Awe sweeps over you as you stand within the circle of these massive man made mounds away from the din of commercialism and progress that has swept through this area as you imagine life from over 2000 years ago in this very spot. Great preservation and informative museum make this a perfect destination for the concerning history buff or the fervent nature lover.

Whether its a family, couples, or school groups there's something for everybody. It's really not cheap for the apples themeselves, but they're HUGE and almost all in perfect shape. You can eat your fill, but one apple is more than enough. The kiddie things cost, but only 2 or 3 dollars.

Midland Theatre

Reviewed By Sightsee_Eat - Worthington, Ohio

I have made fun trips to Newark with husband and daughter and stayed both times at Double Tree by Hilton, which is right across from the Midland. We came in October several years ago to see Paul Reiser (had just finished binge-ing seasons of Mad About You), and enjoyed being in the richly recently renovated Midland very much, especially as we could walk a very short ways back to our hotel. We had actually seen him arrive at the theatre from our hotel window earlier in the day. It was a wonderful short getaway not far from home.

Newark Earthworks

Amazing site that is both peaceful and beautiful (even right next to a major highway) Built by people of the ancient Hopewell Culture between 100 B.C. and 500 A.D., this architectural wonder of ancient America was part cathedral, part cemetery and part astronomical observatory. The entire Newark Earthworks originally encompassed more than four square miles. Please don't walk on the actual works... plenty of "park" space to sit and watch from. There is a Museum at the entrance to give you more information. Go see this beautiful ancient space!

We had a great time checking out The Works! My son is 6 and he loved everything there. We even saw a glass blowing demonstration which was really neat! You can easily spend 3 hours here. Granville Historical Society

Reviewed By RLane_11 - Dublin, Ohio

If you are interested in history, you will definitely enjoy a visit to this little gem of a museum, which exhibits furniture, tools, toys and other collections related to the Granville area in a charming and very well preserved 1816 structure. For serious researchers and genealogy buffs, there's a Research Center accessible by appointment.

I love small-town museums, in spite of the fact that their often eccentric charm is usually accompanied by amateurish, poorly labeled and preserved displays. That's definitely not the case here! These interesting exhibits are beautifully preserved and displayed, with professionally-done labels and documentation, and no lingering scent of great-grandma's basement or attic. The quality of the displays and accompanying documentation makes this a very enjoyable and informative experience. One of the more fascinating items to me was a transcription of a letter written to his wife by a soldier in the 1790s, which provided a vivid depiction of his experience and character. There's a nice collection of artifacts and furniture from early settlers. We also enjoyed the more recent exhibits on Grandma's kitchen and other aspects of women's domestic life. The volunteer docents were knowledgeable, cheerful, and friendly--available when we had questions, yet we were able to go through at our own pace. We ran out of time before making it to the lower level exhibits.

Hours are limited - check the website before making a special trip. It's open on Saturday from 10--4, Sunday 1--4, and some other afternoons in the summer; it's closed on Monday and Tuesday. There's no fee--but of course they accept donations.
