The holy parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Giannitsa belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Edessa, Pella and Almopia. It is the oldest Christian monument in the city. The building permit was granted to a special Sultanic Firmani in 1858. During the Ottoman rule, it was the first (and only Greek Orthodox) temple that operated in Giannitsa.
