Despite the Visitor Center renovations, please stop in the temporary trailer. The NPS video is an excellent explanation of the historical significance of these Bluffs and of the westward migration. 3 easy hiking trails (1 at base, 2 up top) that all provide excellent views. Be sure to take the drive to the top - its quite easy. Wish I had the time to take the long hike by foot to the summit !

Legacy of the Plains Museum is a destination for people interested in stories of human and agricultural history in the North Platte Valley and High Plains. Our new state-of-the-art, interactive exhibits focus on the archeology of Native Americans and Westward Expansion, the lives of pioneering settlers, this establishment of irrigation, the development of rural communities, the diversity of cultures on the High Plains, and the innovative technologies and cultural practices of raising animals and crops in a semi-arid environment.
We were in Scottsbluff visiting family and figured my tractor obsessed two-year-old would enjoy going to see some old tractors. I was not expecting to spend 3-4 hours here! Wow, what a treasure for the panhandle of Nebraska! Simply stated, the "Legacy of the Plains Museum" was fabulous and contained so much more than the "old tractors" I was expecting to see during our visit! In addition to the exhibits in the main museum, we enjoyed touring the historically authentic homes (1950's, 1930's and 1890's) as well as viewing the extensive collection of farm equipment. Equally impressive was our volunteer tour guide, Hunter Miller. His maturity, knowledge and enthusiasm for history led me to believe he was older than a sophomore in high school and we appreciated all the extra tidbits he shared with us while touring each building. Highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting (or living in) the Nebraska Panhandle.

Visitors will be rewarded for a "short walk with a long view" of the picturesque country surrounding Scotts Bluff National Monument. This is a very easy walk on a paved pathway The signs at the end of the trail have a lot of pertinent information about this part of Nebraska.

It’s a very manageable hike. Really nice that it is paved and there are plenty of great stops on the way up. My wife and I took our 2 yr old dog with us and we all did great (although I’m fairly sore the day after. Haha) and loved the views from the top. Definitely the hike you should do if you can manage the 600ft-ish in elevation. ????????
