A sad time in our history and the story of a true hero that was nearly lost. Fortunately a book and plays have been written about Irene.

This entire town has such amazing history. The Milken museum was so very interesting. Loved hearing the stories of the Unsung Heroes from our knowledgeable guide who had only lived in Fort Scott for 4 months herself. The Irena Sendler, Life in a Jar story, brought tears to our eyes. Another exhibit had a saluting wartime dog as it’s hero! We learned so much and stayed for a couple hours at the museum. Be sure to visit the Tourist Information Center as we received so much info on all the things to do, see and where to eat and stay. (Gordon Parks Museum, National Cemetery and the Fort. The Twin Mansion B & B had lovely rooms for not much more than the local chain hotel. We unexpectedly spent a day and a half in Fort Scott, Kansas! Who would have believed such a ‘gem’ of a place existed. J & L from MI

Fort Scott National Historic Site

Reviewed By greeleyguy55 - Neodesha, United States

Fort Scott is a well maintained Pre Civil War site with a lot of history about Kansas during the "Bleeding Kansas" era of Pro and Con Slavery factions fighting near here and the U.S. Military posted here to maintain the peace. When first founded the Fort was the Western border of the United States and a jumping off places for wagon trains headed to the Southwest. The post looks like it did at that time. I highly recommended getting with one of Rangers when they do a walking tour of the place, highly informative. Lots of parking and large parking areas and sidewalks. Just outside of the post is historic Old Fort Scott Township with places to eat and shop. Great place for a day trip or historic stopover.
