Second time here in Fenghuang. We were here during the day on our last trip but this time we just had an evening here. Totally a different kind of feeling, romantic, colorful, and beautiful! All the museums were closed by the time we got there so we just walked along the river bank and took endless photos. When all the lights lit up it was just incredibly beautiful! Some stores had good sales but we ended up not buying because of luggage space. Enjoyed our walk very much.

Phoenix Ancient Town has a few characteristic Bridges, and Hong Bridge is the most famous and photogenic when lit up at night. That bridge reminded me of another photogenic bridge in Florence, Italy “Ponte Vecchio”. The shops on that bridge in Florence sold gold jewellery. This one didn’t have any theme for the shops… just touristy things. But this tourist was not interested in any of that. I enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and fabulous scenery though.
Happy Travelling!

The old city of Fenghuang (Phoenix) is one of the loveliest places I've visited in the world. It reminds me of Venice in Italy, for all the waterviews of picturesque old buildings, barges, Bridges and misty weather. Although it has no canals like Suzhou, most of the scenery centres around the river banks and the gorgeous architecture.
During the day, it is busy with tourists but it is still nice to wander the many narrow winding streets and alleys. After dark though, the place becomes unbearably noisy with bars competing for business by cranking up their rock, pop, Karaoke to ear drums splitting levels. Even though there are laws against this noise pollution, they are not enforced, as they seem to bring in the customers. As if all tourists just want to get rolling drunk and tone deaf (or just plain deaf). I find it a shame to spoil the 'old town' atmosphere this way, and this type of noise just sends me running away from the bars that seem to be everywhere.
tip: If you do go, bring your best camera, and earplugs.

If you like shipping on the river Tuo, you should go early in the morning! It takes 2 hour to stay in the queue for entering. If you don't like this crowded area, you can go to "Space Cafe" for a cup of Tea and a Cheese Cake. The view is fantastic above the River Tuo.
It was raining cats and dogs, so we were going after enjoying the sweets in the Ancient City Museum. It was interesting to read the long history about the town and his family.
Of course, it was comfortable to be inside !!!!

take a boat on the Tuo river is really a good trip, you can enjoy the stiled wood builldings(which is a special building of Tujia and Miao people) along the river side, some people singing moutain songs, some Miao people washing closes in the river, everything become peaceful. in the evening, you can spend your time to enjoy the night scenery of this old town, you can dancing with her,as well as just sit in the bar and have some drink.

It took us 2 hours flight from Beijing - Zhangjiajie plus a total of 4.5hrs on 2 buses from Zhangjiajie - Jishou - FengHuang to have finally arrived this ancient town. The journey was really long and tiring! Since it was the May 1st Labour Day holidays, the ancient town was packed with tourists, mostly young locals despite the wet weather. (Note: it's going to be a very tiring trip if you only have 4 days and wants to cover both FengHuang ancient town and Zhangjiajie).
We were unable to book an accommodation on either side of the Tuo River and had to settle on a budget hostel which is a bit further from the river. We later found that it was definitely a better choice as the pubs along the Tuo River will only stop the loud music after midnight (anyone who has visited Houhai in Beijing will know what it's like). I am definitely willing to trade for a good night's sleep over the scenic river view.
The best way to explore FengHuang is by foot, strolling the back alleys. The old town still maintains its old intriguing charm. Pieces of dried meat and flattened pig faces hanging outside restaurants and dired meat specialty stores. For souvenirs, they are all gathered in East Gate Tower and Hong Bridge and each shop sells almost the same stuff. You may also find a few of the Miao elderly with their baskets of handmade traditional pouch filled with fragrants for sale. At the age of 80, the Miao elderly woman is still able to produce excellent sewing and embroidery work with traditional motives.
A RMB148 through ticket will grant you entrance to the Yang Family Ancetral Hall, the former home of Xiong Xiling, Gucheng Musuem, Wanshou Temple and a boat ride along the Tuo River. Much of FengHuang can be seen for free.
Take a boat ride to enjoy the views of FengHuang's riverside buildings. The wooden houses are built on stilts. Alternatively, you may choose to cross the river over the stepping stones or the crowded wooden footbridge. This is best done sober or risk falling into the cold river!
If you are into photography, the misty sight of the Tuo River minus the crowd in the early morning and just after the rain will make a perfect composition. When night comes, the colourful and brightly lighted wooden houses along the Tuo River lights up the entire river and presents another mood. If the river is calm enough, wonderful images of the reflection may be captured.
There are many restaurants along the Tuo River serving fresh wild vegetables from the nearby hills and fish from the river. However, the restaurants tend to be over priced compare with other tourist area in China. We also agreed that the Hunan dishes are saltier compare to other provinces.
Well, in my opinion, it's not a "must do" destination and especially time is really a constrain!

Time is money! If you have nomoney, you sholud have time for a stop on thir wonderful place of history. It not the biggest gate on her way into China but unforgettable. The nature is coming to the wall, the wall likes the green too. To pass the wall was an amazing situation in the City of Huangsiqiao. I'm impressed about the ancient.
