We’ve rode the Roaring Camp Railroad from Felton to Santa Cruz but never took the opportunity to cross the tracks and visit the park until now. Most of the trails are easy to navigate (Pipeline Road is paved) and dogs and horses were also allowed except where noted (unfortunately Redwood Grove Trail is the most popular). Inside the Redwood Grove Trail, lookout for the mother and father trees, banana slugs (stop 12), tree with albino leaves (stop 14), the giant tree (270 feet tall, 17 feet wide), etc. the high canopy of the trees obscured much of the sunlight in some areas. The walk was quiet due to our early morning visit but later the sounds of the Roaring Camp train escalated as they got ready for departure. We did not have trouble finding parking but it was good to arrive early as the lot was almost full near lunchtime.

The Lime Kiln trail is our favorite summer hike. From the parking lot you drop into the cool shade of the redwoods and follow the stream on a picture perfect woodland trail. You'll reach a beautiful photo-op bridge, where the trail gives you a choice of right or left. Go right to continue following a fork of the stream on your left. Eventually you will reach a junction that by turning left will lead you back around to the Lime Kilns. Here there are the interesting remnants of the lime production industry that helped to build San Francisco, with educational signage and explanations. By continuing along the trail beside the river, now on your right, you will return to the photo-op bridge, and back along the way you first came. At leisurely pace, this is roughly a 3-mile, 1-3/4 hour visit.
